Official 3rd Gen 4Runner Scooped Sport Hood Photo Thread

I did some searching and discovered that there is not a dedicated thread for photos of Runners with sport hoods. This is not a cheap mod, but it is popular - you will always find owners looking for these. A scooped hood can really transform the entire front end of a 4Runner... It just gives it a more overall aggressive look.

My sport hood is being shipped to me, so the best I can do in the meantime is post a photo of the hood I bought and another of a Stellar Blue with a sport hood.

Some owners paint the bulge insert a color other than the body color - this can look sharp as in the photo below showing it painted silver to match the Limited trim...

I don't know what Runner this is from, but I like these TRD stripes...

I've seen some hoods painted black and this can look very cool...

I've never seen one in person, but here is the carbon fiber version...

From 1999-2002 scooped hoods were standard on Highlanders/Sport Editions and available as options on all SR5s (I think). Of course they will fit on any 1996-2002 4Runner. It would be great if we could get photos of 4Runners with sport hoods in every color combination on this thread as a resource for members here.

As much as I like the hood scoop on mine, it would have been nice if it actually had functional credibility.

However, for the Japan turbo diesels, do the hood scoops (assuming they got them too) actually let the intercooler receive cool air like Subaru's hood scoop design?

Surf Runner, you have a gorgeous 4Runner. I love that color.

masphx,

As far as I know the scooped hood was an option from 1999-2002 on the SR5, but never on the Base or the Limited.

The scooped hood was standard on the Highlander/Sport Package/Sport Edition from 1999-2002. The 2002 model is the only one out of the 4 that has Sport Edition badges. The Highlander/Sport Package/Sport Edition was only available in a select colors. Every 4Runner with this package was only painted in one of these 6 colors:

1999: Black, Imperial Jade Mica
2000: Black, Imperial Jade Mica, Millennium Silver
2001: Black, Imperial Jade Mica, Millennium Silver
2002: Black, Thundercloud, Sunfire Red, Stellar Blue

Black: 4 years (popular color choice)
Imperial Jade Mica: 3 years (very popular color choice)
Millennium Silver: 2 years (extremely popular color choice)
Thundercloud: 1 year (fairly popular color choice)
Sunfire Red: 1 year (not nearly as widespread as the colors above)
Stellar Blue: 1 year (rare color)

Most of the OEM sport hoods you will find on craigslist or in salvage yards will be black, green, or silver. My guess is that 80% of all sport hoods came from the factory in one of these 3 colors. I can tell you that black and green are slightly more common than silver. The assumption would be that there are more Black hoods than Imperial Jade Mica just because Black was available for all 4 years, but that would be wrong if the sport package was painted in Imperial Jade Mica much more often that the Black from 1999-2001. From having done a ton of searches (on HollanderParts.com and Car-Parts.com) over the past year I would guess than it fairly evenly split between Black and Green as far as OEM scooped hoods produced.

As far as I know any SR5 could have a sport hood as an option, but I could be wrong (Does anyone know for sure?). The reason it is difficult to tell is because the Sport Package started as an upgrade to the SR5 and only the 2002 Sport Editions are badged.

I assume that if you could order a SR5 in natural white you could have also have ordered a scooped hood.

I can tell you that from personal experience any color other than black, green or silver is somewhat rare. I looked for a year before I found an OEM Stellar Blue sport hood from a wrecked 2002 Sport Edition in Long Beach, California.

ToyotaBrah,

Thanks! I think that it will look a lot better with the scooped hood. I see that you are from KC. My brother lives in the Overland Park area and I am usually up there for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year I went to Rich Industries Imports (Winchester Ave) in Kansas City, MO and they had a Thundercloud or Silver sport hood on a 4Runner that had just been wrecked. It also had a supercharger on it (in a salvage yard!). Anyway, I went there a few weeks ago over Thanksgiving and both were gone. That 4Runner looked like it had been picked clean by vultures.

2002 Sport Edition

No. They never sold the 99+ Sport Package in Natural White. You could not just tell Toyota to plop on a scooped hood at the factory on your plain jane SR5 or Limited either.

Can we get an "Official Regular Hood Thread"? :P

Just a little input on the SR5's upgraded with a sport package add-on, yes they do exist and I've seen a couple in person, both I've seen were IJM, they were badged just like SR5's of the 99-02 era would've been with a small "sport" badge added to the rear hatch.

They usually had the wider SR5 painted flares (Wider than limited and plain sports by ~1 inch) and I saw nothing special besides the scooped hood, but it may be possible that they got the silver dash trim as well, just my .02 to throw into the topic.

That is a great paint job on your hood. Was it easy for them to match or did they need to blend it into the fenders?

Thanks, they didn't blend it. If you look closely you can see its slightly darker than the original paint. I wax it twice a year so it's not too faded. I had a junk yard rear hatch (original was dented) & after market hood sprayed at the same time.

Do tell! Does it allow air in through the filter and into the engine or does it just allow air into the engine bay?

BTW, I like the all black going from the hood down through the grill, especially with that really small stripe... looks niiice.
