The dashpot consists of the piston (which you have installed), a small air filter and a cap to hold the filter on. You are missing the air filter and cap.
As far as I know, you cannot just order the filter and cap, but should be able to find both at a junkyard for spare change. It still works without those, but if it gets clogged up with dust or mud it'll seize up.
I didn't know 3rd gens had dashpots, I thought it was just 2nd Gens. Or maybe just on manual transmissions?
