Help me improve my rear tire carrier

Hi guys,

About a year ago I bought this rear tire swingout from a fellow T4R.org member. Overall I really like it. I like the angle of the tire and the ease of opening the swingout. I also like that it weighs ~60 lbs which seems pretty light. Now I would like to improve upon the design and usability.

Goals...
-add a jerry can or two (gas and water
-relocate the license plate higher ( but still be able to have a light on it)
-still be able to carry a 255/85/16 (might be my next tire size)
-backup light ( not priority)
-hi lift mount ( again not priority)
-keep costs low

I have no welding experience. I will most likely have a weld shop do the improvements. Seeking design ideas from you guys and advice on what you would do.

I was thinking about buying this jerry can holder and welding it onto my bumper. Have no idea about the dimensions on it though and if it would even be possible.

So here are some pictures of it...

a nice area for some jerry cans to the left of the tire...

I couldn't tell you in good faith to add any more to the weight that swing out carries without first plating the frame and using a bigger hinge.

Remember that stuff weighs a good amount and fuel or water sloshes around. I could see adding a shovel, pick ax, and high lift but I wouldn't go adding jerry can holders personally.

Also you've got a fairly good sized storage space where your tire used to be. You could rig something up to use that space too.

A Destaco clamp and appropriate sized delrin or rubber bumpers would stop the rattling.

Thanks for the input. Honestly not sure how much weight the swingout could handle. I can tell you it seems very solid in person. The bolt is a double sheer with 1" tapered roller bearing. The original owner told me his intent was to add the jerry cans. That is a good tip though about the unused space below where the tire would be. Not sure how safe it is to put gas cans below though (Not that they are real safe hanging out on the rear of the 4R).

If you built a rack with a solid bottom that hinged down towards the rear I bet you could carry two cans in it without fear of punctures. It might even work with the spare cable......I dunno. Just tossing ideas out there.

How's the tire carrier working out for you? Any new updates? Love the idea of this carrier.
