Cruise Control wont engage

Hey everyone I got a slight problem. My cruise control will light up on the dash but when I try to set the speed it does nothing. I've done some research and cant really find anything besides the cruise control actuator cable being unplugged.

Cruise Control 1996 Limited

I dont think that is my problem because it will work every once in a while.

I recently just got a ticket because I'm so use to CC, so I would like to get this fixed.

Any ideas would be awesome. Thanks!

Are 3rd gens still vacuum held throttle for cruise control? I do not own a 3rd gen, but I owned a 2nd gen and it was a split vacuum tube problem. I know the 4th gens, which I own now, are entirely fly by wire and there is no vacuum control but I don't know about yours.

My point. If it is vacuum held throttle position, then the electronic side of the cruise control system my be fine; allowing the computer to turn the light on thinking it works. But if the vacuum line that physically holds the throttle open is split, it won't hold pressure.

If it isn't a vacuum held system.. ignore me. I wanted to be helpful.

The other thing I would check is the switch on the brake and/or whether the brake pedal is returning all the way up.

On my 2004 Tacoma (which had a 5 speed) I had a period of time when it would do just like yours: Light came on the dash but CC would not engage. Like yours, it was an intermittent problem. After a little bit of looking at it, I realized it was because my clutch pedal was not fully returned, which meant that the CC-kill switch was still on

(On MT vehicles there are two CC kill switches, one for the brake and one for the clutch. Pressing either pedal will turn off the CC. On auto tranny vehicles there is only one on the brake.)

Thank you, Where exactly where I find this switch though?

Sorry I'm not to familiar with CC or electronics in general lol.

It's attached to the brake pedal, I believe. Try pulling up on the brake pedal with your toe to make sure it's fully disengaged and see if that works. If it does, then it might be that you just need a new return spring for your brake pedal.

I've had this happen once where I was in drive but not all the way in the drive position. Once I moved it in completely it engaged instantly. May not be so lucky for you but its worth considering.

Is yours a 5-speed? If so it might be this: 3rd Gen Cruise Control Wont Engage - YotaTech Forums

Noticed mine did the same thing on a recent trip, despite having worked like two weeks prior. I dug around on the internet and that was one of the things I found. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, possibly tomorrow though.

Sadly its an auto. I could not find a five speed in my price range.

Thanks for the info though. I will update if I figure this sucker out.

I need Cruise!

I know this is an old(er) thread, but I thought I would see if anyone had a picture as to where this switch is. I am having the same problem with the new-to-me 4Runner I just purchased. I drove to school, cruise control engaged, drove back and it was not working. I think this pedal switch may be the problem, but if anyone has a visual diagram of it, that would be much appreciated! If not, i'll try and snap one tomorrow and see if someone can point it out to me.

Yes my horn works, headlights work, brake lights work, turn signals work, and cruise control light stays on and has power. I think I have nailed it down to this pesky little switch... just need a little help on where it is located, and what adjustments should be made.

Thanks.

Cruise Control Problems

I have had the same problem with the cruise on my 1996. The original actuator failed following a series of times when it would not engage. The light always came on but when you would go to engage the light would go out and the unit would not hold speed. If I stopped for a while and began to travel again it worked. This went on for a while before it quit for good. I installed a used unit and it worked for several years before it failed in the same fashion. I installed a second used unit which worked for a day before it began to exhibit the same symptoms. The dealer has looked at the problem several times without much help. I am reluctant to install a new unit at $2K if there is an underlying problem causing the failures.

Any ideas?

3rd gen cruise control problem fixed

Had the same issue intermittently, the permanently;Cruise light comes on but won't set on 98 4runner.
On the Manual tranny, there is an interlock switch that engages when the clutch pedal is up (fully engaged). If your pedal spring gets worn, like mine, the pedal won't come up and fully engage the switch. To fix:
Remove electrical connection from switch. loosen locknut (14mm) on switch. Screw the switch down until you see interlock button fully compress. Tighten locknut. reconnect electrical switch.

Same issue

I also have a 96 4Runner, recently purchased used. The cruise control lights up on dash but CC won't engage. I do have an issue with my clutch pedal not going up all the way also like seen in previous posts. Glad to hear my symptoms are falling into place. I can probably fix both issues at once if I fix the clutch pedal issue.

Gonna look up that spring and how to replace.

Cruise Control issue some peoole...

So some A hole previous to me or before the guy I bought it from decided It was a good idea to rip out the wires to the plug on the clock spring so my cruise and horn don't work and being dumb I just thought I was the clock spring wires ripped inside so bought a used one on ebay for 30 bucks, so I take the airbag off and find the wires are ripped lol instead of just unplugging it,

where can I find a new/used cruise control thing with the wiring and whatever else I need and can just recrimp the one wire on the wheel to the new plug? Any help would be great thanks!!

I know this thread hasn't had much traction, but I'm not sure where to go myself.

My cruise control won't light up or set. My horn works, and I have no airbag light. I've tried pulling up on the brake, no success. One thing that happens is that my brake light comes on while accelerating, but I'm not sure that's related to getting no cruise light. Any thoughts?
