I didn't know exactly what the sensor would do other than give information to the ECM about where it thinks the timing is for the cams... Any thoughts?

It shouldn't be a problem. If you don't have a 0330 or a 0325 code for the knock sensors then the ECU should be advancing and retarding timing as needed so you don't have any pre/post-ignition. The ECU uses the crank sensor for ACTUAL crankshaft position and speed. I extracted the code and wiring schematic info from the FSM for you. This is an indication sensor only and doesn't control anything. Like
