My first toyota, coming from a jeep. Always wanted a 4runner but couldn't afford one. Picked this up with a blown motor. Been trying to find a replacement motor but they are hard to find up in Canada!

I had to do a bunch of engine work to mine, and ended up having a machine shop rebuild the entire thing. i looked at JDMs, and used but couldn't find a good one. I tried looking at tacoma motors too, most of them seem to be distributor type, instead of the coil type ignitions that 4Runners (at least mine) have.
I know a lot of guys on here swear by OEM, and thats all fine and good when you can find it. I would look into having yours rebuild if possible.
Whats wrong with it?

The style of ignition is based on when the motor was built, not if it was in a Tacoma or 4Runner. Just a little tidbit of useful info.
95.5 - 96 (Maybe early 97) had the distributor, 97 - about halfway through 2000 was the wasted spark 2 coil setup, and after that they had a coil on plug setup.

Good to know. I just mentioned the difference since most JDMs out there were dizzy ignitions.

I'm thinking that my best bet is to rebuild it then. Previous owner said there was a knock and I bought it with the engine ready to be pulled so I kind of have no idea what's really wrong yet. Top end looks good so far but I still need to drop the oil pan. Definitely seized as I can't crank it over with a ratchet. Picked it up for $700 and it is almost rust free! It's my first toyota so I hope it's worth spending the money on

Once you get her back up and running, she'll treat you good for years to come, one thing I can definitely recommend if you end up going with a rebuild on your current motor is doing the balance shaft delete and a set of cams, that really wakes up the engine quite a bit. I'd really like to do it to mine, but I'm too cheap and it's my daily lol.

Progress over the years. 255K on the clock. Had this car since I was 15 and amazes me how I can always count on it to get me from A to B. Nice builds everyone!

If any of you have insight, I would welcome it.

This is where the party is!!!!
What's up fellow 3RZ'ers? I thought I was alone out here in my 4cyl beast. I am glad to see I am not alone and look forward to hearing about anything you guys have found or come up with to make The 3rd gen 4cyl rock a little harder.

Lc header and a full exhaust help some. A piggyback a/f tuber helps too.
Cams, turbo, supercharger, valve springs, headwork and lots more is out there for the 3rz......unlike the 5vz which has a supercharger and very little else.

There's a ton of info on boosting our little RZ motors over on Customtacos.com, it's definitely a solid motor for adding a turbo.

So I have a question for us 3rz owners. I achieved more lift from the 99 springs than just 1" and the front is kinda bouncy. What I'm thinking of is instead of running the tundra trd setup with 5100s getting my hands on some tacoma trd springs for the v6 and running those with the 5100 for the tacoma. Thoughts?

Saw this on craigslist and I thought I would share it with the 3RZ guys. I have no affiliation or have no idea if it is still available. This is the first time I have seen one of these for sale.
