Help - Adding a heavy duty tow plug
Hey everyone,
I recently just picked up an older horse trailer that has a flat 7 prong cable, a heavy duty plug. I have a 2002 4runner 4x4 with the tow package. When I went to look under the my truck I didn't see any heavy duty cables to hook up to. I may have missed them but I wanted to check in and see if there are even cables under there for me to hook up to or if there is wire harness kit I need to buy to make at new socket to work. any help would be appreciated.

the 1996-2002 4Runner tow package consisted of the hitch receiver, auxiliary atf cooler, towing controller, and the 4-pin harness. the towing harness comes out at the vent behind the LH side of the bumper. I think the 7-pin became an option in the 2003-current 4Runners.

Sounds like you'll need to add the 7 pole plug and associated missing wires and a Brake controller aswell if the horse trailer has electric brakes.

I've never even heard of a flat 7 prong trailer connector. Are you sure about that? It's a thing, but the only trailer connectors I've seen are 4 pin flat or 7 pin round.

He means the pins are flat. It should be the "standard" RV 7-pin round connector. There is also a 7-pin connector that uses round pins (older style).
