So now that we are back from our trip and we have another trip on new years, I have a couple of things that I need to fix before next trip out. Obviously I needed motor mounts so I ordered a pair of Trail Gear Bomb Proof Motor Mounts for the 1st gen Tacoma's. Part #186040-1-KIT Bomb Proof Motor Mount Kit - Trail Gear
I also was having some trouble going fast through the big stuff. My front shocks are basically shot and caused me to bottom out everywhere, so I lowered the pressure on my rear shocks to absorb more of the hit, so that the front doesn't take quite as much abuse. This ended up causing me to bottom out the rear a little more but really helped even out the suspension. So I ordered a set of Wheeler's Offroad SuperBumps to help make the front feel a little more progressive on the bigger hits. https://wheelersoffroad.com/product/...-bumpstop-set/
To keep things even i decided i may as well get some bump stops for the rear to slow down the impact, since the stock ones are small and stiff. I ordered a set of Daystar Competition Style 4-1/2" Bump Stops. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My front alignment is really bad and I think its due to the front LCA bushings being completely shot so I ordered a set of Whiteline Bushings to hopefully cure the issue. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1


I'm hoping these with improve, on and off road handling and last much longer than what I have now. Hopefully this weekend I can install my new battery tray and start making room for 35's in the near future. One other thing I need to look into is figuring out how to get a 2low option. I've seen it done before but haven't searched for it yet.

Here are a couple pics from that big ole ledge that I accidentally drove off, not realizing it was so steep. From the drivers seat it didn't look so bad, until I was staring at the ground. I probably could have drove it off on my own but I had my wife and daughter in the car and didn't want to risk flipping. So I had my brother hook up a strap to keep my rear end pulled down while I drove off. Someone has a video but I haven't gotten it yet. The bumper worked really well when I slammed down coming off the ledge though.

So I replaced the LCA bushings and installed my new rear bump stops. I'm not 100% sure that I like the new bump stops yet. They are 2.5" longer than stock but they are able to compress pretty well to about the same length as stock. They cause a lot of rebound when hit though. Its nice to not bottom out hard but now I have only 4.5" of up travel before it hit bumps instead of 7" like I used to. It just feels weird and is probably just something I need to get used to.
When I went to change my LCA bushings to the Whiteline poly bushings, I noticed how bad the rubber ones were after last weekends trip. I just replaced these bushings a few months ago and they obviously don't last very long with the abuse I've put them through. I was able to wiggle the whole control arm as if there was no rubber left between the two metal sleeves. I actually had to replace my passenger side LCA because the tube that the bushing presses into was ovaled so bad. Also the lower shock bolt hole was ovaled really bad and the bolts were so worn down they needed to be replaced. Now that the new poly bushings are in, it drives like a whole new vehicle. Everything feels very stiff and tight like it's supposed to feel.
The pics are shitty and I can't figure out how to make videos work from my daughters Fire tablet but you can see how bad the LCA was.

Nice fab work on the bumper and fender trimming, looks clean! Those nose dive pictures are pretty gnarly! 😂 If you're still undecided about tires... I just got a set of km2's (255/80/17) and love them! They're quiet, ride smooth, and are pretty damn sure footed even on wet pavement.

The last trip out I found out that I broke a motor mount. Turns out I actually broke both motor mounts! My engine but have been twisting, turning and bouncing all over the place. I swapped out the mounts to the Trail Gear Bomb Proof poly motor mounts. These are way beefier and shouldn't be able to completely separate like the factory ones did. The increased engine vibrations are barely noticeable and doesn't bother me whatsoever. I was a little nervous from all the people telling be the idle is extremely annoying. It's not. At least not with our little V6's. BTW swapping motor mounts are a real PITA, because there is no room to get any tools in there to work.
I also got my Wheelers Superbumps on. Wow! What a difference it makes! I'm looking forward to hitting some real trails soon. I just went up the street to a little trail and a small spot to test flex. I used to bottom out hard all the time in the front, now it is way more progressive. I will leave some more feedback once I actually go on a full trip. It does limit articulation a little bit, but not that big of a deal to me. The pros should outweigh the cons on these.

Rear Daystar Competition bumps. Still not 100% sure if I like them yet. They may be a little bit too tall but I will run them for a while and see how they perform.

Well! That didn't last long! Since I wasn't able to go off-roading over the last couple weeks because of the motor mounts, I went up the mountain to test out the new mounts and new bump stops. Things were going great. Motor mounts added some response and bump stops felt amazing. I pulled into my driveway and something didn't feel right or sound right. I noticed the fan was rubbing the fan shroud and figured the mounts were just shorter than stock. I looked at the motor mounts just to double check things were still good. The trail gear mounts looked great but...
Where the motor mounts bolt to the frame were broken. FML I'm going to probably have to pull the motor to fix this.

I just found out that this was actually broken before I went off-roading. I was looking at a couple pictures that I took after I tightened all the bolts and it must have broke as I finished tightening the bolt. No idea how I didn't catch this before. It wasn't broken as I was working on it. It must have had a crack and the pressure from being pulled tight but have just finished the crack. Not too sure how to go about fixing this.

I'm with you; looks like repair with engine in place isn't an option.. :/

On the other hand, if you have to pull it, you can beef up both of them, I guess.

Yeah if that is what I have to do, I'll build some beefier mounts to the frame on both sides. The only option I can think of without pulling the engine would be to make a new flange and just weld it over the old flange. I may have to do this as a temporary fix to get it to my buddy's shop so that I can pull the engine.
I actually uploaded the wrong picture of the broken mount before I took it out. Still can't figure out how I didn't catch it earlier.

I honestly can't tell. I was wondering that too and couldn't really see much in the dark to check, even with a dental pick, I couldn't really see if it is a crack. I will try to check once I get some daylight.
So bummed right now over it. All I have been wanting to do lately is just get my truck running tits again and go off-roading instead of working on this thing all the time. Oh well! Gotta pay to play. More excuses to upgrade things.

Cut with a torch, remove the piece, fab a new mount using the old piece, and weld? Then plate them a little to prevent it from happening again.
