This is my average with factory tires and bumpers and a mild lift. It's just gonna get worse.

Now with 315s my gas light comes on at 195-200, still takes 14-15 gallons to fill it

When I filled it up after this, it took 15.7 gallons. 21.48mpg for this trip. This is after some level highway (not interstate) travel. Mine is stock. I'm not saying this is what I always get, but I get 300+ by staying at 70mph. Fuel light always comes on with at least 4 gallons left.

Just got my '99 hilux surf a week ago fresh from Japan. I have been pretty concerned about my mileage which is brutal in comparison to my previous vehicles.

Turns out it seems somewhat normal. Its been very cold here so hopefully it improves with milder weather but I just got 320 km to the tank with a 53.5 Liter fillup.

I guess I'll have to get used to having a much thirstier vehicle. Ah well, its worth it!

A/F ratio sensor helped with mileage

After having a lovely CHECK ENGINE light come on for me, i was forced to take action on what turned out to be an AIR/FUEL ratio sensor... similar to an O2 sensor in regards to it being a sensor on the exhaust system.

thanks to @TheDurk , i was quick to buy the sensor on amazon for around $100..

funny enough, i wanted to see what toyota would charge and the dealer wanted $323... like serious bro?!?! have you heard of a thing called "the internet".....

i have been getting better mileage but still nothing close to 300 miles....
but 260 miles is still better than the 220 i was getting earlier...

I'm still curious how i can fill my tank past 17 gallons...???

. . . .

Dude I don't know how you guys get almost 300mpg on a tank ! I never came close. 250-260mpg and the gas light is on. On 285/75/16 E rated. No armor besides skid plate.

Are you taking into account the OD error because of your tires?

With 275/70/17s on mine I go an extra 6.5 miles for every 100 the OD registers. So if the trip OD is saying I've done 285, that's just over 300 actual miles.

Everytime I've filled up I've never been able to get more than 16 gallons. Its actually a small tank for a SUV that size. A co-workers little Mercedes SUV had a bigger tank, not to mention the pickups some of my co-workers drive.

I was the same way. Could hardly get 15.5 and felt like I had been on dead empty for 2 days.

Learned a trick though- find a station with a pump that is on a slight decline towards your passenger side, like your right tires are on a downhill slope (luckily I have one at a Shell next to my office).

Once the pump automatically shuts off, top it off by holding the gas pump handle manually so that the gas is coming out at about half the rate it does when set on auto.

I do this and can usually get another 2 gallons in. Think it has to do with 1.) the angle the neck enters the tank allows for more fuel and less air than if it were on a level surface and 2.) letting the gas run at about half the rate decreases the bubbles that come up the neck and lead to an early shut off.

Works every time for me and haven't had gas come spewing out the neck yet.

I've read that routinely overfilling your tank can damage your evap canister by allowing liquid fuel to enter.

Something to consider I guess for those trying to stuff every drop of fuel they can in.
