any big differences between 00-02 limited grades

Just wondering...

What are the differences between 2000 and 2002 Limited 4Runner.
I already know that the 4wd system is different but what else.
I also know they have new wheels, which I like very much.

Anywayz, take it EZ
Matt

4x4,

Starting in '01, the 4wd system became ATRAC (4-wheel traction control)...no locker is available. ATRAC first came on the Land Cruiser in '00.

Besides the 4wd system, the braking system also changed in 2001:

1. ABS is now with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD).

2. ABS is now 4-channel, 4-sensor, instead of 3-channel, 4-sensor. This is needed because of the incorporation of ATRAC (4-wheel traction control system) and VSC (stability control).

In addition, something that you found out already, the transfer case is easier to operate!

The other differences are probably minor. I have a 6-disc in-dash CD changer/radio combo...do you have it?

Other than that, i don't know. Try reading the archives on the 2000 model and 2002 model...they may mention the changes.

Sorry, can't help you more.

VSC

I think one of the biggest changes happened in 2001. All 4Runners now have Vehicle Skid Control.

The Brake Assist that Thai mentioned is terrible. Toyota thinks people brake normal in certain situations when they should brake hard. The result is when you touch the brakes, they tend to grab or brake hard. I dirve two cars and when I go from my old Acura to the 4Runner I tend to over brake.

Thai you mentioned the engine was different. I think you ment they dropped the 4liter engines in 01...along with the 5sp tranny too.

I only have the 1 cd in dash....not the best stero system ive heard.

I also heard that the 02 limited have seat warmers. Man, i could really use them in this COLD socal weather!;)

I also realized the grills are different. I think I like mine better. On the 01 and 02's it looks like the grill sticks out a little bit.

Take it EZ

4x4,

I think they dropped the 4-cylinder engine around 2000 or 2001. Actually, i misspoke, i meant "Besides the 4wd system".

I think the '01 4Runners have seat heaters too. For sure, my '02 has seat heaters...i don't use them much at all even in this cold season.

5 speed & 2.7 liter

The 5 speed and 4 cylinder were built to the year 2000. In 2001 they were gone. I drove a 4 cylinder in 2000, it was not that great. They still have the 2.7 liter in other countries.

Thai, why is the transfer case easier to operate in a 2002 vs. 2000?

the way i take is it that:

On the 99-00 you can run it in just 2wd. Then you push the button in for full-time 4wd. Then shift down to lock center diff.

For the 01-02 your in full-time four all the time,no matter what. Then you push the button in to lock the center diff.

Correct me I'm wrong anybody?

Matt

Hey all,

Well, the '01 and '02 models have a simpler transfer case. You do have a 2wd mode...pushing the "4wd" button gives you full-time 4wd (or 4-HI that you can use on dry land). Then, you can shift into 4-LO by moving the lever forward. Locking the center diff in either mode (4-HI or 4-LO) can be done by simply pushing another button (to the left of steering wheel).

So, basically, the transfer case lever in '01/'02 just moves in 3 position: 4-HI, Neutral, and 4-LO. And it moves up and down.

I think the '99 and '00 models have a "J-shaped" transfer case lever. It does not have a separate center diff lock button. So, basically you have to manipulate the t-case lever to the mode that you want...thus, it has to be J-shaped because there are more positions than just 3.

At least, this is how i understand the '99/'00 t-case. Correct me if i am wrong.

I’m torn on allowing this to stand for first place submission. Normally this award is reserved only for the uninformed. I’ll have to consult with the ruling council on this… 8 days shy of being a 19 year thread bump
