I was about to pull the trigger on a 4x front bumper and then ended up with an AOR plate bumper. I cut the frame rails off with a cheap harbor freight grinder in <30 mins and then you just have to drill (2) 9/16" holes in the frame. There's really not much too it, and the new crossmember is stout. The 4x is definitely a nice looking bumper though.
I didn't do the SS1.2, but I did do bilstein 5100s all around, trd coils up front and OME 906s in the rear. Once it settled, it's perfectly level (with the fronts on the bottom perch) and right at 2" higher than it was factory. I usually carry a good chunk of stuff in the back, and I kinda like a bit of rake anyway. At somepoint I'm going to swap out the 906s for superflex coils (but then comes the extended brakelines, bumpstops and new panhard bar). It definitely rides like butter. My cousin has a stock 100 series and is always compliments me on having a smoother ride on the trails than he has.
|
It's not too bad of an area. There's not much wheeling here, but several parks about an hours drive from here.
I really like the AOR bumper, but I'm afraid I'll be covering up the grille if I mount a winch in it, and there's not really any places to mount lights on it without covering the grille. If I get the 4X bumper I'd get it with just the single grille guard like the AOR one. It's a tough decision, 4-Ripcords old 4Runner looked amazing with the 4X bumper, but there are several trucks now with the AOR bumper that look equally nice. It may just come down to which one I can get the best deal on.
I'm leaning towards just ponying up and getting the SS1.2 since it comes with everything I need like bumpstops, brake lines, etc. and I really like a raked look, which that would provide. Plus the LC springs get real flexy!

Thanks! These are my favorite OEM Toyota wheels. These and the grille really gave it a more modern look I think. Still haven't seen any local 4Runners with the Raptor grille, there's a few 2nd Gen Tacos, but no 4Runners. Haven't seen any 3rd Gens on these wheels either. Not too many modified ones here. A lot of bros in their Tacomas and FJ's here though...

Do it! I'm lazy too, that's why I never put one together. It would have been easier to do it at the beginning rather than all at once, but it's done now. I didn't have anything to do last night so I spent about 3 hours going through pictures, and trying to remember everything I've done to the truck. It's a lot more than I realized, probably a lot more expensive than I want to realize too... Oh well, it's mine and I like it.

I was glad to see this thread when it popped up the other night. I followed along as you added more posts and info, and it's been cool to read the story / progression of your 4Runner.
I've always been a big (albeit quiet) fan of your rig, to the point that I don't think you should even mess with it anymore. It's a perfect "OEM+" setup just how it sits, but I also know the slippery slope... it's hard to leave well enough alone. Seriously though, it looks awesome, and it'll do 90% of what you want it to do just the way it is.
That supra is incredibly clean. It looks like it just rolled off the line. It's missing something in the engine bay, though.

Do you have a link to the lights you mounted in the roof racks? I need to do the same on my wmw rack, but seems all the lights are just a little too tall.

Thanks man, means a lot coming from someone with such a clean truck. I really do like the way the truck is right now, but I can't resist playing with it some more. I don't think I'll get too crazy though. I've been looking and the SS1.2 might actually be too much of a lift for my desires. I may just go with a OME/Bilstein setup. That'd be cheaper too.
Thanks for the compliments on the Supra too. She's not a Turbo, but that keeps me out of trouble and makes maintenance a little easier.

Do it! If you look around enough you can probably find a good deal. I picked mine up for $500 with the brand new stock tires on them. I sold the stock tires for $350 so I was only out $150 for the new wheels.

Yeah it took me a little while to get this thread up... I like the Toyota switches, they fit cleanly and they feel solid when you flick them too. I've never seen those CH4x4 switches. They look really nice too.

I'll be getting them powdercoated semi-gloss black most likely by the same guy who did my sliders and roof rack. He can't get to them this week though so it'll be the second week of November until I can get them installed. They're super beefy though. I'm excited to get them on!

What kind of headlight bulbs are you using? I looked through your Electrical/Lighting category and external, and was looking throughout the post, but I might have missed it. They're bright as hell

Thanks! The rims have a few small scratches on them now from my trip out at hawk pride. Nothing super noticeable, only I will probably ever notice. Ill have to check them out if I ever get around to washing the truck...
The rear lighting is great, I haven't had a chance to really use it yet though. Haven't been on any trails since adding it.

I never did post it. At the time I had GE NighHawk Platinum bulbs I think is what they were. They only lasted about 10 months though so this time I got sylvania bulbs, which ever are one step above their cheapest. XtraVision Maybe?
The brightness might be a little exaggerated in those pictures. They are certainly better than the OEM bulbs, but nothing to write home about really which is going to be the case with just about any bulb in the stock reflector housing.
Today I finally got my Kenwood amp installed and JL 6.5" components up front. The blue sea fuse box is starting to fill up quick, it was certainly a good addition. The amp fit perfectly right on top of what ever computer it is back there. I think that was the location of the stock amp actually.
Even after just adding the amp I could tell a difference with the stock speakers. I did notice that the stereo doesn't beep anymore when I switch modes, from radio to bluetooth, etc. I guess it's set up to play that tone through the speaker wire outputs only and not the RCA's. Since the speaker wires are no longer connected to the rear of the headunit that noise is gone...
The JL speakers sound fabulous so far. No distortion and they sound very tight and not boomy like the old stock ones. The driver side tweeter had started to crackle as well a few weeks ago so that's nice to not hear that anymore. The tweeters were even able to mount in the factory locations without any modifications so that was a plus as well. This is my first "higher end" sound upgrade and I'm really happy with it. I don't think I'll ever install aftermarket speakers without amping them first ever again.
I went ahead and did some sound proofing on the front doors while I had them apart. I used Peel and Seal instead of Dynamat on the outer skin, covering as much as I could, and used a little on the inner skin trying to not cover any holes or anything. The driver side didn't have that plastic moisture barrier for whatever reason, I've never had the door panels off the truck before...
On top of the Peel and Seal I put a 8"x8" square of closed cell foam directly behind the speaker. I read this is the recommended thing to do, but I can't remember why. Then I made a cover for everything using the closed cell foam as well. I just cut out around the door handle, a hole for the wires, around the speaker mount, and any other holes that needed access. I also had to cut around the lever for the door handle as it was binding. I glued it at the top using automotive spray glue this way it can be lifted up in-case I ever need to work on something back there.
I put the same closed cell foam on the backs of the door panels. I know it isn't pretty but it should get the job done and no one will ever see it. I took a few pictures during the process with my phone, but they're kinda bad so excuse me for that. I'll post them up anyway since everyone likes pictures.

Well my latest thoughts for a lift are Tundra Coils, 5100's, LC coils, and LC shocks in the back. Basically the SS1.2 Lift, but I plan to gather all the other parts separately and new only. I don't want to put used suspension parts on this truck.
I think I can get everything for right around $1150 shipped vs $1450 shipped for the SS1.2. That would include the panhard bar, brake lines, bump stop extensions, diff drop, Tundra isolators, and everything their kit comes with essentially except for the sway bar brackets but I plan to get the longer links from
@ MStudt
most likely so that shouldn't be an issue.
I've heard the Tundra coils support weight pretty well and ride nice too, and the LC coils are real flexy and ride smooth too.
Anyone know what exactly the "Sonoran Steel Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Polyurethane Top Plate Retainers" are? I think they're just a top plate spacer. If so I can pick up a set of those and have essentially the same exact kit for about $300 less. I can put that money towards UCA's or sway bar end links.
Also, is it recommended to replace the top hats? I've got 179k on the truck but I don't really know if these are wear items or not. If they should be replaced are aftermarket OK or are these like the LBJs where Toyota OEM is the only way to go?
Anyone see any issues with any of this?
My eyes are about to start bleeding I've read and researched so much about lifts...
