Never seen this done but I've thought about it. People worry more about the transmission when towing though. Never heard of any engine cooling issues while towing with these but the upgraded clutch can only help. Maybe it's noisier?

Ok thanks, heavy duty always sounds better haha. Just wanted to see if it was worth the extra cash.

I thought there was only 2 fan clutchs used on the taco's and the runner's. The red "standard" and the green "heavy duty". My runner has the green one, always assumed it was the "heavy duty" fan clutch.

I believe all 4Runners came with the green fan clutch, along with all Tacomas up to 2000. In '01 they started putting in the orange clutch in Tacomas which only rated the truck to tow 3,500 lbs, and you had to pay extra for the "towing package" which only consisted of the green fan clutch (Getting the hitch receiver and 4 pin wiring was separate). So if you have a 4Runner then you should have the green fan clutch, which is the best they made.

You've probably not heard of it due to the lack of people monitoring their engine temps. They just see the needle on the dash not moving, and think they're fine.

When I towed a pop up trailer (Fleetwood E1) I was seeing temps as high as 210 when going over long, steep inclines with OD off. Outside temp was probably 70-80ish. For comparison, I have never seen my temp gauge over 198 even when on the trail in temps over 100 degrees.

I recall seeing a thread on MUD where you can change the fluid weight of the clutch to alter the performance. Just another option.
