How to: brake booster

Where is the brake booster in a 01-02 located?...

Is there anything to be careful of when removing or installing it?...

My booster goes off every single time I brake!!

I want to replace it.

Do I need a new master cylinder? Or brake booster?

Does the pedal get rock hard when you brake or does it go to the floor? Good way to test the booster is to have the car off and then pump the pedal until it gets hard. Keep your foot on the brake pedal and start the car. If it gets soft after you start it then it's not the booster. If it stays hard then it's either the booster or vacuum problem.

My brake booster went out on me two years ago. Really simple to replace. There's 4 bolts that hold the booster on and one pin that connects the booster to the pedal. I did not need to replace the master cylinder.

If you replace the MC just make sure you bench bleed it before installing.

the only time it got really hard and basically almost would not brake even though i was pressing on the peddle as hard as i could is when i was going down a hill for a long period of time braking the while way down... like a steep incline if you were wheeling for example...

besides that it usually just "boosts" or makes noise really after every single brake!!!

the thing that is making noise is a component on this!!!

. . . .

Ouch. You've got a hydraulic booster. Little more complicated than vacuum. The part below the reservoir is the booster. But definitely sounds like a booster. Mine is doing the exact same thing.

Are you leaking any fluid? Sometimes you can get away with replacing the check valve, and sometimes not. If not replace the entire unit and call it good. Your master cylinder is the section with the fluid in it. The booster is the round solenoid on the side. This is the booster.

This is the booster still connected the master cylinder.
