Switching to 4.10's

2002 4Runner. My truck originally had 4.10's and I am going to switch it back so that it matches the front ratio. What are all the parts that I need for the rear differential? I can get a whole carrier assemble used for $400. Seems like a lot. Wouldn't I only need the ring gear and pinion and maybe bearings too?

what are you switching it from?

are you still stock? tires/lift/armor etc?

yes, you can just swap the 3rd member. its probably the cheapest, and fastest way to do it.

$400 seems a high, especially if its an open diff. ive seen lots of them for $100. I sold a geared/spooled diff for $400...

yes, R&P and bearings, plus a set up kit. then the install. all total would be more than $400.

I dunno bought the truck an I guess the rear end had been replaced. Have an issue when locking center diff it binds. Feels as if the front and rear are not working together. Trucks at the dealership right now to diagnose the problem. Theyre saying there is a different gear ratio or the front diff needs to be replaced. So I can buy a front diff with 4.10s for $275. So I asked them to verify the rear had 4.10's. They replied with rear has 3.9's so would you want it back to 4.10? Then I looked into getting a used rear diff. They want $375 for a 4.10 rear diff

So yeah maybe they're jerking me around cuz maybe they really haven't worked on the truck yet.

Struck set up is sitting on KO2's 33 x 10.5 x 15, 3in toytec lift and 2in body lift. Truck drives fine in 4wheel drive. But binds when locking center. Trying to figure out where to start.

I'd jump up to 4.30s. I've got 4.10s in mine and it sucks. I couldn't even imagine 3.90s.

Yeah for 33's, try and go as low as possible. Find out what diff gears are in there right now and go from there, However, I doubt the difference between 4.10's and 4.30's will be that noticeable.

Yalls definition of fast and mine must be drastically different. My wife's old xterra was faster than my runner.

I've smoked many "supercharged" xterras and fronteirs.

However, my 4Runner is by no means fast.

OP: Buy a used diff on craigslist. You'll simply need to pull out your old on, scrape the gasket off, apply some RTV, and throw it all back together.

A 4.10 rear w/o locker should be dang near free.
