All this just so you can pass emissions?! God, I hate California - well, their government anyway. I'm so glad I'm in Indiana...we have no emissions testing whatsoever. My truck had 2 sizable exhaust leaks that hadn't been repaired yet when I went to go get plates and Indiana just doesn't care. It's pretty awesome.

I really think I have a EVAP issue. It's been 450 miles and two tanks of gas and the EVAP didn't set yet. At least in my area a 97 is allowed to have two monitors not set. And my pending P0420 Cat efficacy code let me pass inspection. The P0420 finally set today.

The Rear O2 sensor at times swings as high as the preCat which is bad. To me seeing .820 at times means the O2 sensor is good and no gasket leaks.

Did some research, having the same issue on my 01 4runner. Emissions test showing evap and catalyst "not ready" and the vehicle needs to run thru a drive cycle. As per the manual, the drive cycle is slightly complicated. Anyone come up with a simple way to perform a drive cycle to get all the systems ready for emissions?

Evap & Cat Rediness

First time posting but have used this site for help with my 4Runners for many years. I recently had the same issue with my 2002 SR5. I read all of y'alls posts and which were all helpful in identifying my problem. I know this thread is a few years old and your issues have probably been resolved but I wanted to post my experience to help others in the future.

I live in metro ATL. My county requires a 2002 vehicle to pass all emissions tests. My 2002 kept failing for rediness for Evap and Cat. I had no codes and no CEL. Vehicle ran perfect but would pass rediness. I did multiple drive cylces and drove near 1000 miles and still the same result after multiple retests.

After checking the canister and hoses I decided to build a smoke machine to test the evap system. Using the port under the hood on the drivers side I smoke tested the Evap system. I noticed a small amount of smoke from around the gas cap. Knowing I already changed the gas cap with the same test result (not ready) I dug into it a little further. Around the top of the filler neck there is a molded grey plastic sleeve. After removing the filler neck it appeared as though this sleeve was a little loose. Since the sleeve can't be removed or replaced I would up ordering a new filler neck assembly online from one of the Toyota parts places online ($195). That darn filler neck was the issue all along. Once I took it to be retested it showed as ready and passed!!

Hopefully this information will be helpful to anyone challenged with the same issue.
