Cv axle play

Asking if someone with a 4x4 3rd gen could get under there truck and tell me if there is any up and down play in the cv axle where it goes into the diff if so how much because min has about 1/8th of an inch up and down play if not just a little more and it is leaking around the outer diff seal just trying to find out if I need to rebuild the diff or just replace the seal

Sounds like a seal...but to my recollection the CV axles shouldnt have play.

That's what I'm saying but the axle riders in needle bearings inside the diff so if that bearing was bad it would be in peices

I have about that much in mine. I noticed after I used Napa cv's. I also had in and out play and a leak. I changed the seals and left them out about 1/8" to account for the in/out play and all is well. Still slight up down but no in out and no leaks.

Ok good to know I just replaced the seal today so we will see if that solved the problem I notice a slight more amount of play up and down on the driver than the passenger. Wbu

Seal have nothing to do with in and out play. Did you remove the OEM? There should be a small play as the only retaining part is a metal clip which usually have a slight play.
