Engine tick

Every older Toyota I've ever had made a valve noise that I called the Toyota Tick. They were all 4 cyl with the exception of my mom's Camry. I recently acquired a 1997 with over 200k on it. The Tick is there and sometimes very pronounced. I should probably adjust my valves for this one but may not get to it for a while. Is there any great risk with this noise in a 6 cylinder?

Could be the valves need adjusting but if it does it when cold in morning its usually due to a little low oil or oil needs changed. I know my 4runner will tick on cold morning starts if 1/2 quart low. Once I top her off no more tick.

I started a new thread about my, now necessary, valve adjustment job.

I notice a tick since I've owned my runner about 4 years ago. Oil is not low, all adjustments have been made, I don't think it is anything to worry about. I think its normal for the engine.

I have owned at least 20 4Runners. The majority of them had the tick. Although right now I have a 2002 Limited with 119K miles and it does NOT tick.
Go figure. I think it is normal also.

Interestingly enough, I had a mild tick until I did my timing service. It went away after that.

I'm used to the tick. That's why I named it. I'm just being more cautious with this one.

The one that doesn't tick, must be broken....
