E-locker to non-locker rear

My 97 rear e-locker is leaking pretty bad. I have found a non-e-locker with 4.10s that is fully rebuilt for $150. Is it a simple process to swap? Is it dumb to get rid of the e-locker?

Shame you're all the way across the country... I'd swap with you

I'm sure most will agree with me here. Do not get rid of your locker. A fully rebuilt third for $150 is cheap. The gears are standard. ECGS wants $600 plus core but, they're the best you can get. Who did the rebuild? What brand gears are in there? See what the cost would be to rebuild the locker and park your 4runner for a while. OEM lockers are hard to come by. If you decide you don't want it, please let me know. I hope you keep it.

EDIT: You're only an hour and half from me. I'll drive up and pick it up from you if you decide to do the swap.

If you pull the entire housing, yes. If you need to put the open third in an elocker housing, it'll take fab work. Yes, it's dumb to get rid of the elocker.

What exactly is leaking?

I replaced the putter seals a out three months ago. I'm assuming it's the bearings.

I'm pretty sure it's the bearings on the axle that are leaking. You know how hard it really is to fix these? I know requires a machine shop and all.

I wanna keep my locker. Trust me.

You're leaking gear oil into your drums? It's almost definitely your wheel bearings, and replacing your third won't fix it, and you don't need a machine shop to replace your bearings. Even if you don't have access to a press and a welder to make an SST, you can cut the old retainers and ABS rings, and once they're off the wheel bearing comes out with a hammer and a drift. Buy new ABS rings and retainers and drive them on with a piece of thick wall 2x2 square tube you can get at any steel supplier or scrapyard. There's nothing hard or scary about it.

Give Adin a call at NW team Yota (360)953-8676. He's in the shop now. They're right down the road from you here in Vancouver.

If he can't help you, call ECGS on Monday and ask for a quote: 919-672-2705

^^^^^Yea, HUGE difference between axle bearings and your locker.

This post is so ironic because I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on fully assembled thirds from ECGS for my 2001 with 4.88 gears and considering adding the ARB lockers to both the front and rear. Cha ching $$$$$$$$ I would have the best of both worlds with A TRAC and Lockers.

Does your existing axle have 4.10s also?
