canoe transport options
hey all,
looking for some pics of what people use for transport of canoes on top of truck. For many trips have just strapped down on top of rack , but looking for something a little more secure for my wooden canoe .
Thanks,
Matt

Just strapping it down is really the best way. You can buy little foam blocks that are made just for this purpose that fit between the gunwales and roof rack. There are also pads available that wrap around the tie down straps to protect that beautiful wood.

What about something like the surf board pads wrapped around the cross bars? if it's only the one, the stock cross bars should be fine, but you could always get a little more space with a yakima/thule system. I would think the pads would help a lot though.

The canoe-specific racks are made for separating goofballs from their money. Strapping it down on the cargo bars is the best way to carry it on the roof - one strap from the bow to the front of the truck, two straps across the belly. These look neat - I've always just tossed my boat up there, but mine isn't nearly as pretty as yours, so maybe a little help loading it up there might keep it that way.
Or build/buy a canoe trailer. A little HF trailer with an extended tongue and some boat rollers would work well.

On a side note that's a beautiful canoe did you build it?

I've hauled canoes about 10K miles thus far. I've primarily used Yakima racks with rubber hose on the cross bars to protect the gunnels. Two straps across the canoe along with a bow line and stern line. Sometimes I don't use the stern line if I'm going to be getting stuff in and out of the back of the vehicle while the canoe is on the rack. The OEM 4Runner rack is much too far aft to use alone. You'll need a cross bar much farther forward than that rack offers.

Yes , built it a few years ago. I always have just straped it to the stock rack with the foam blocks and it works fine , just looking for options on a possible better way. I thought about a small trailer also, but we have a Scamp pull behind trailer for 'camping' that eliminates that idea. Thanks for the replys though everyone! I'm thinking I may make some more permanent type lower profile blocks that would attach to the rack and keep the 'wiggle' down a little at speed. thanks again.

When I'm out duck hunting and we take our aluminum canoe I just strap it down on the factory crossbars. No issues really if I wanted to add some foam it would make it a bit better. For a wood one I would definitely have foam or rubber up there.

That's one fine piece of work Stiles. Very nice. How long is it? I just purchased a 16 foot Mad River and it's longer than the 4Runner by a almost a foot.
Rubber padding along the gunwales is a pretty secure option - protects both the roof and the boat. Depending on what you get - grippy rubber will help prevent any sliding along the roof front to back.

I have a 16.5 ' kevlar Swift canoe and use a Yakima roof rack.
That's one beautiful canoe you have there so I would do it right and use a proper rack to protect it and the truck

Thanks everyone for the input and compliments. It is 15' overall length. I'm working on an idea and will post as it comes together.

To think I thought I was the only person on here that has built one. Have you built any paddles? In particular a double bend paddle like Bending Branches makes? I've been looking around at building a couple, but doubt I'll ever have time to do it.
