Rarest 3rd gen of them all?
Ok it's late and I'm stoned so this is the time I starting thinking like a kid. I started wondering what the rarest 3rd gen would be? The unicorn of the 3rd gen world.
I personally have no idea, but I'm wondering if there is some super rare interior option, or paint scheme or.....something.
We've all heard tales about some hotrod from the past that had some weird engine or engine/tranny combo; only seven came from the factory that way — sort of thing. What would that be for the 3rd gen?

Jesus Christ I'm curled up in the cargo area of my 4runner listening to Pandora with a fifth of fireball too comfy to go back inside.
This thread just feels right I don't have any unicorns but I have this ****in dragon thing on my bottle that's down to party.

holy shit I was laughing at the unicorn comments / photo
To my knowledge- from the factory, there were a few "HIGHLANDER" models that came out with TRD exhaust manifolds, TRD s/c, and a couple other options. Those were later renamed the SPORT model and changed options. I could be very wrong about this. Going off what someone posted on a CraigsList ad a while back.
Custom- DIRTco, BigFishAllDay, steezemcqueen are just a few off the top of my head ORG members who have rare 3rd gens.

The supercharger and headers never came from the factory. Ever. That person is full of shit. The Highlander isn't rare.
I'm going to say that a 3RZ with a manual transmission and rear locker is the rarest. Throw in the manual windows with that mix. I saw one that was close, but it didn't have the locker.

I think the days of rare options are probably long behind us, just because of the way cars are made these days, and the government regulations involved.
It's really expensive for a manufacturer to certify a low volume drivetrain, and then there are safety concerns on the interior because of interactions with airbags and seatbelts. I think at best you might find a production mistake that ends up with a strange color combo.
All the 3rd gens I've looked at (and that's a lot) were pretty standard, with the obvious exceptions of E-Lockers and manual transmissions.
My car has a production mistake on the interior that is rare (and absolutely worthless) and it took the BMW forums to figure out what happened.
When you order a 135i with navigation the i-Drive controller take the place of one of the cup holders in the center console. To make up for it BMW adds a removable cup holder on the passenger side. My car doesn't have navigation, but does have the 3rd cup holder. There were several of them showing up in the US like this, and we eventually figured what was happening. When the dealer adds the navigation option it adds the cup holder option code, but when you take the nav option back off, the ordering system didn't remove it.
My car was originally in the pipeline for dealer stock, and we reconfigured it the way I wanted it. That was the case for all the ones coming in with three cup holders.

Mine is a little rare. 99 SR5 4x4, manual, 162k with sunroof in Stellar Blue and grey cloth. No locker...yet. Still broke from replacing the frame and all the suspension!

I once saw a blurple (forget the name of the color) limited with silver cladding. I thought that was pretty, uh, unique.

Yup. PO welded sheet metal over all the frame rot and spray canned it black. Sourced a perfect 2001 frame, prepped it and POr15'd it. Then installed 99 tall Highlander edition springs, Bilstein 5100's, poly bushings everywhere and new brakes. Damned near perfect now. See my photo album for details.
