I finally got the supercharger installed. I had the broken ear welded and I resurfaced it filling any imperfections with jb weld and it seems to be working just fine!



I Jb Welded the seam of the weld and then sanded it all down smooth before installation.





Here is the vaccum line layout for the 1st Gen 3.4 Supercharger, mine ended up slightly different but it all seems to be working correctly.





Also, 7th Injector with IAC Calibrator installed, I made a bracket for this and just mounted it below the AC Blower and it bolts to the 2 bolts next to the glovebox screw.

Thoughts on how it feels with the supercharger?

It definitely feels much better, especially city driving. It gets up and goes much easier from a stop, and also its been way better at holding speeds on hills without downshifting.

It is still learning and each day and its driving better and better but I have only put about 100 miles on it so far. We will see what a little more time brings.

I certainly wouldn't spend retail on a supercharger but if you find a good deal like I did its totally worth it.

All in I think I have spent around $1,400 which is an insane deal so I am very happy.

$1400 is a great deal, I'd consider it at that price. As you say, retail is harder to justify.

I'm curious about gas mileage impact. I know that will the SC it will be easier to put your foot in it, but over time if you decide to drive it gently to see how mileage was affected, I'd be curious. I always hear "it's about the same".

So far, even putting my foot into it a bit becuase its really hard not too, I am seeing around 15-16 city which is comparable to before. I havent ran highway much with it yet but the couple times I have I was seeing 17-19mpg averaging 70.

All very likely to be skewed as I have only about 200 miles on the truck since the install.

Yeah…. cost to value is kind of my hold up. I’ve rode in one so far. It’s good, I’m just not sure it’s 3-$4k good…

Why not go larger injector vs 7th injector?

The larger injectors was the old way of doing or the work around for the EGR system on older tacoma's. The 7th injector according to URD works better and was a breeze to install compared to replacing all the injectors. Both require a calibrator, upgraded fuel pump, colder spark plugs.

I have a lot of fun projects lined up for the 4Runner this winter, excited to get some time and get cracking on all of them. In the meantime here are a few photos from the last few months.

How about an update on your thoughts on having a supercharger on there! It's been a little while now, and I'd like to know what your opinions are.

The Supercharger is 100% worth doing if you get a good deal on it. Especially if you plan to run stock pulleys and enjoy the sounds and increased driveability of the truck.

I kind of dove off the deeper end of things adding the 7th Injector and a smaller pulley. It has been WAY more fun to drive the truck but I'm just now finally going down the rabbit hole of tuning the truck to solve some pinging issues. I finally got an AFR gauge installed and realized I've been running lean and there is a lot of room for improvement.

As far as reliability goes it's hard to say, it's so dependent on how you drive the truck, I beat the crap out of the truck when I use it. It's a toy for me so I don't take it easy, so I am constantly having to do maintenance, fixes/ upgrades. That said I don't think the supercharger has or will change that by any means. It will likely decrease the life of my already old engine but I don't mind doing a full rebuild or swapping in a low miles 3.4 when that time comes.

Premium is fine, I'm used to filling up a Diesel with 30 gallons on a regular basis so a full tank of premium on the 4Runner is still a pleasant hit to the wallet in comparison. Fuel economy is nearly identical too without a supercharger for normal driving and on highways it is marginally better. It's much easier to maintain speed at lower RPMs and generally requires less foot to keep it moving. On my last road trip with the truck which was about 1200 miles, with lots of wheeling, mountain passes, and dirt roads I averaged 16.5mpg.(Full camping gear, passenger, dog, and rooftop tent) Averaging 65-70 on the highway sections. I really do think so much of it comes down to driving style and the Supercharger makes it way easier to have some fun and burn some fuel so if you drive like normal I believe it helps.

I would absolutely do it again for what I have invested, that said I would not spend over $3k on it. If I was to drop $3k+ it would be on a turbo setup because... whoosh whoosh, pshhh, pshhh is pretty damn cool.

The cost of the premium isn't an issue for me, but rather the availability of it in Idaho I feel like. Just based on using premium for snowmobiles. I imagine where you live is similar though.

I too know the feeling of diesel fill ups. That $7.29 full 35 gallon fill up was one to remember.... about like filling up semis once upon a time money wise...lol. The 4Runner fill up is absolutely cheap in comparison like you said.

I find it interesting that there's lots of supercharged 3rd gen owners that say the mileage hasn't changed. That's pretty impressive really. That's obviously what the bypass is for, but most forced induction systems almost always come with a steep economy penalty. Mass air is never free right?

I'm in the same boat as you. My 99' is purely a toy that is street legal and functions like a backup car/ car without compromise. Well, at least as little compromise as a set of mud tires affords in terms of road noise and traction on ice in the winter....lol.

I do think I'd like to keep it stock fuel. Just to avoid all the little things that seem to come with smaller drive pulleys.

Fast is relative these days. My tuned diesel used to be stupid fast. My 23' tundra is faster yet, and stupid fast on launch. But it's all slow compared to these ev's now...... sadly. Good grief them things are silly fast.

Looks like you have a GFC superlite tent. Those things are cool. I emailed GFC and asked when the US made superlite is coming. They said it's still in development. I keep waiting on that one too.

Another question for you. How are you addressing a spare tire? Repair kit?

Alex and his rig are an OG in this community in my mind. His build thread is one that makes me glad this forum still exists and is still active at all. So much helpful info here. I know he has other fun vehicles, but it's refreshing how long folks can keep these old gutless 4Runners modded how they want for so many years. Really excited to see what he has in store for it this winter...
