Cleaning Power Steering Screen + Cardone Magna-Pure Inline Power Steering Filters

OK. I was starting to get a groan out of my steering. (Put on a new rack a few years ago and asked the shop who installed it to flush the system.)

Did some research and found there is a fine mesh screen in the bottom of the power steering reservoir. I took off the power steering pump (PITA) and unbolted the reservoir. Sure enough, I could not even see the light coming through the bottom of the reservoir. I cleaned it out (careful not to puncture the screen) and once it was clean, let it dry good. While this was drying, went to Advance and picked up a 3/8" barb Cardone Magna-Pure Inline Power Steering Filter. It goes in the return line. This thing has a fine mesh screen and a magnet as well. It will act as the "pre-filter" to the filter screen in the reservoir. It's made from machined aluminum and well built. It can be removed and cleaned and has a bypass so it will never clog. (BE SURE TO CHECK THE O-RING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE RESERVOIR WHEN YOU DO THIS!)

I had kept checking my fluid level and it was always full before any of this. The reason it was full, is that it was not circulating through the clogged screen. Had I not heard the groan when I did, I probably would have ruined my rack because all the cursory checks of the fluid level were "normal".

Drove around a bit to warm up the system and now NO GROANS! (Just had to top off the fluid....

NOTE: The 17mm bolt holding on the main fluid line IS A BEAST to get off!!!!

I never knew I needed to check something like this on my 3rd Gen but glad I did. Hope this helps someone out!

A lot of us run magnifine filters on PS and also on our AT which offers true filtration + magnet filtration of the fluid vs. a filter screen. Any filtration is better than none though.
