That's a really slick kit. I'll probably do something similar with my own parts and pieces.

I've done exactly this and have been using it for the last year or so. Yep, IO get a CEL from it. No it won't pass smog but it's also a trailer queen. It's not like I am driving it 300 miles a week. I didn't have room in the engine bay for it to stay. I needed a tire to go there instead.

I deleted mine and drive it every day with no cel. Find the diagram for the 3.4l swap in a 3.0 truck and use that vacuum layout for the 3.0 charcoal canister only leave out the canister. Works fine on my 96.

why not relocate it to the back near where the spare tire is, just like in the 2001-2002 4Runners?

Does anyone know what the cheapest online retailer is for purchasing an EVAP canister for a 4th gen?

I've had my EVAP/ Charcoal Canister bypassed for some time now and just barely bulled the Charcoal Canister out so I thought I'd share how I did it. The way I bypassed it is much easier and simpler than the ways mentioned above. No tee fittings, no breather tube and still vents to your intake rather than directly to the atmosphere. Gotta keep the hippies happy Honestly, it's just a better idea in my opinion so that fuel vapors are not just dumping out into your engine bay or outside of your vehicle. You will smell unburnt fuel sometimes out your exhaust but better than fresh gas fumes all the time.

There are only a few lines that need to be changed with this method. Basically all you need to do is locate your Fuel Tank Vent Line and unplug it from the Charcoal Canister. Locate your Vapor Purge Valve and unplug the lower hose that connects to the Charcoal Canister. Now plug the Fuel Tank Vent Line directly to the Vapor Purge Valve. Then locate the hose that runs from your Air Box to your Charcoal Canister. Pull the hose and cap the tube coming out of the Air Box. That's it! Now just unplug the pressure sensor and unbolt the Charcoal Canister to pull it all out. Easy peasy! This can easily be done without any modifications in just a few minutes, so everything can easily be put back into place when you need to pass SMOG or Inspection.

Hope this helps anyone that is looking to gain some room in the engine bay.

Thank you sir. I owe ya one. Just completed this earlier today how you have it and no CEL

Ended up mounting it on the firewall just above the booster to keep it out of the way and to keep it tidy. Almost look like its factory.

Now I have room to mount my fuse box and have all the relays hidden underneath.

Do you know of someone who has done this? I've looked all over and can't find a thread about it. I have a 96 and want to move mine to the back. Thanks!

Well, no joy. Tried Assburns method and after a couple of days I got a CEL (I'm assuming it's not something else but haven't checked yet). Gonna keep playing around with it, and if I can't find a way may just pull the CEL bulb and check codes every month or so

I don't know if anyone has done it. perhaps the system used in the 2001-2002 4Runners can be made to work in the 1996-2000 4Runners

I removed my evap in my 97 last fall and drove it around all winter, no codes. I have been looking for a decent evap from an 01,02 so I can see what’s involved. At some point I will try it. Living in the rust belt once the trucks go to salvage they are so corroded back there you would need a grinder, torch and TNT to get anything out.

This is exactly what I did on my 1995 3RZ-FE Tacoma. The system on my Tacoma seems slightly less complicated, but I took the charcoal canister out and hooked up the tank vent line to the purge valve which still goes to the intake. So far no CEL. About to leave on a remote hunting trip with the truck, so if no issues pop up I'll leave it this way.

You guys sure your CEL bulb isn't burned out LOL.

Took about 2 or 3 days, then the first code I got was for the Pressure sensor (P0450 I think). I had unplugged it so figured maybe there was some logic in the ECU that needed to see it there, whether there was any pressure to sense or not. Another few days, then the code was for incorrect purge flow (P0441). Put it all back and will noodle on this some more..

Hahah yes and no. Yes my bulb was burnt out but no the codes did not show up. I have a reader that I usually leave in the OBDII port and check it somewhat often. I don’t think I’ve gotten any of those codes ever. I did get a code at one point but it went away and never came back. I think it was unrelated to this modification.

Having some misfires occasionally now. Not sure if related but I'll undo this for now.
