This screen and gasket kit looks more like the OEM to me, but the description talks about some sort of heat expanding material on the initial gasket installation.

Thoughts?

Yeah that looks like the kit I used. No probs so far!

Valuable Information

Great Thread.

Had been running with a P0773 code since I acquired this '97 LTD almost a year ago.
Also couldn't shake P0130 & P0133 O2 sensor codes although I replaced the upstream sensor.
Recently she sprung a P0758 Shift Solenoid "B" code.

Gathered some technical Toyota diagnostic information here.

Got oriented with this entertaining video.

Scored the parts as suggested by StreetCreeper on this thread,
...and learned that the job was less difficult than anticipated.

The 100+ miles since the new solenoids and filter have been the longest without a single trouble code (knock-knock).
Could there be "chaos" linking the O2 sensors and the Shift Solenoids?

All I know is my Runner is Running better than ever and I'm grateful to this Forum.

Help! This thread still alive?

I have just purchased this kit...

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...ontent=general

and put them in. Before the changeout, the truck would stumble with the same problems mentioned throughout this thread (OD, late/weird shifts, etc.) and now it runs terrible!
Is it possible I could have put a solenoid in the wrong location? How do i know which Is which? There were numbers etched into the back but I don't remember what they were exactly. One solenoid was silver on the back where two others were copper.
Two solenoids were packaged together (the copper ones) so I put those two in the location along the drivers side and the one which was packaged by itsel (the silver one), I put into rear location.

What is going on?!
This thing is undrivable now.

Anyone have a source for a sub 150k 01-02 A340F tranny in SoCal? Dropped the pan today to find small slivers of metal, needlebearings perhaps? Changed out the filter and did a drain and fill.... only to have the code for the shift solenoids to come on 75 miles later.

I am unsure for this kit specifically as I have the amazon kit. All of the solenoids looked the same, I had to pull the clips on them and install 2 on a bracket and the 3rd went by itself. They all appeared to be the same solenoid.

What are the symptoms now?

Also, did you bench test your old solenoids? Maybe try bench testing them and/or installing the old ones to see if they conditions change and go back to "normal."

Thumbs up

So I just did all of the solenoids, filter and fluid. Tranny barely moves at 4K RPM. And goes forward in reverse gear. I made sure solenoids and wiring are placed right. What did I mess up? Not enough fluid, TC?.. I should add that reverse was basically nonexistent before.

Well, update is that she was low on fluid. Runs great in D, but still no reverse. Code cleared, but check engine came back after a couple hours driving. I’m looking at linkage.

Hello, were you able to fix your problem? Coz I have an issue with mine. I got a "P0755" code and no reverse (sometimes, I can reverse). I hadn't change the solenoids yet as im not sure what to do yet.

Cool

Hey i just got my 02 runner a few weeks ago, have done tons of work to it so far with 284k on the clock (thanks md state inspection). I bought the truck knowing it had a pending shift solenoid A and B code. I had the battery out multiple times chasing knock sensor codes (moral of the story: ALWAYS use OEM sensors), and the shift codes were gone for about 10 miles of driving. Today it downshifted hard and the engine light came on. Did a scan for codes and solenoid B moved to a confirmed code. It had always shifted a little funny anyway so i want to think the issue is not elsewhere with unrelated systems. Im having the dealer troubleshoot these codes, because i didnt feel like getting covered in tranny fluid. I got covered in plenty of oil and coolant already from doing knock sensors twice… and a rusted rear axle cover (sealing that with PRC aircraft fuel tank sealant. Look it up, its good stuff). Will get back to this thread and let you know what they tell me.

Bad news on the transmission front. Dealer dropped the pan and shes got metal shavings everywhere in there. They said dont even bother with fresh fluid and solenoids. Told me they could get me a reman yota genuine trans for 3800. Ouch. Between a new rear axle installed (failed inspection. Bs) and this, my wallet is definitely hurting. Im keeping the truck just because of how much ive put into it at this point.

Got the final bill back. With the core (about 1k), the trans was 2600. Ill post the pictures of what failing was. The transmission filter screen was full of metal.
