No expert on the 3rd gen here, but in other rides, and I imagine true here too:

steering pump
steering rack
something happened to the alignment
notable tire pressure drop

They're coming for you...

Timmy, I know you don't live in Sacramento County, but you know how these politicians, especially in CA, are. Once someone comes up with a whacked out idea and makes it law, the next county will try and one up it.

Yet another reason to leave CA. Wow. If "this" makes its way down to the San Francisco Bay Area, that might be the final straw for me...

Don't want to take us more off track, but I have parents here and I'm an only child. A growing list of reasons to leave though...

Let's get back on topic! Sorry Timmy.

Morkai, get the steering sorted-out?

Low Idle Stall issue

My 2001 4runner idles low, around 500 rpm when fully warm, but when the engine is only half warm it idles at 400 rpm. Right after I start it (when the engine is half warm) if I give it gas it the engine dies. It will start right back up after and be fine. No problems when the engine is cold and everything else is fine ( no cel)
I'm thinking the IAC or maybe coolant temp sensor. Suggestions? Thanks

This is seriously scary. I think the intent of the law was maybe to not have people parting out vehicles in their front yard, which I agree that I wouldn't want to see in my neighborhood. But, like usual, these liberally ran cities take it way too far to the level of absurdity. I bet the auto shops and dealerships love this in Sacramento. If somebody gave me a ticket for working on my vehicle on my own property, I'd tell them to shove it up their ass and I'll see them in court.

Hey guys, just picked up a 2001 SR5 4x4 this week. Due to my lack of knowledge, I drove off the lot assuming 4x4 was working, when in fact it was not, keeps flashing. Now after lots of reading, I think I need to replace the transfer switch indicator (84222-35070). I've read other posts about people simply changing out the transfer case/differential fluid and it working again, but that just doesn't sit right in my head.

Background on the vehicle, single owner, 101,700 miles. It belonged to an older lady, it's in great condition, but I don't think she followed the recommended time to engage 4wd each month to keep everything lubricated. I'm hoping it's nothing too serious. I'll be stopping by the dealer after work and hoping they carry the part. I will be swapping out all the fluids as well.

Thanks for this post and this forum. This has got to be the most resourceful forum I've seen, granted i've only been on a Civic and Ram ecodisel forum, but the information is great.

@Dodtbdm Did you pull out the switches to check for continuity with the switch depressed?

@Dodtbdm I would check that first before you start throwing parts at it. All the switches on the transfer case and the one switch on the front differential ADD tube should have continuity when pressed in (closed) and no continuity when out (open). Another common failure is the transfer case motor. Check to see if the front driveshaft spins freely in the 2wd position but does not in 4HI. If you need any further help you can PM me. I just went through this on my 2000 Limited. Pretty similar except my front diff actuator for ADD is vacuum operated where yours is electric.

The furthest switch in the back is open (no continuity) when the switch is depressed. Not sure which part number this is as the diagrams show 4 switches, and I'm only seeing 2.

The front driveshaft spins freely in 2wd, but does not spin freely in 4hi.

I can't find the front switch. Been referencing videos and drawings and am coming up empty.

@Bad Luck I sent you a couple PMs. My outbox shows empty, so I'm not sure if you received them.
