Hello, David here, coming to the forum for advise and future pointers for maintenance and projects, unsure if this is a good place to post. Currently I am in the middle of an issue with a 2002 4runner. I took it to a toyota dealer to do timing belt kit and when they returned it it developed a ticking ONLY in gear. It is either only in low RPM or you just cant hear it after a certain RPM. Took it back within 20 miles, they said the master level technician took a look at it and said everything is fine and there is nothing mechanically wrong with the vehicle and wouldnt stress too much on it. they said what it could be is exhaust pulse but verified there was no exhaust leak and manifold was bolted correctly and gaskets were good. I wouldnt stress too much on it but it only has 95K miles on it and has been perfect for the 1 1/2 years ive had it. The tick sounds like it comes from the front center of the waterpump/thermo when scoping with a stethoscope. Technician verified it wasnt valve lifters, trans, or arching from coils/plugs. Genuinely at a loss now as the vehicle has never made this noise before they worked on it and strangely enough only activates in gear rev/drive. Everything is stock and the car just received its first major service in my hands.

Ladies and gentlemen, about a month ago, I was driving my 2000 4Runner limited. When I took off from a red light, there was an audible pop and the engine died. I coasted to the nearest parking spot. The engine wouldn't start. It will turn over but not start. Everything is going through my mind from timing belt slip to fuel sending unit... HELP!!.. lol
You can email me directly at [email protected]
Any help is extremely welcomed.
Thanking you in advance.

Your timing belt probably snapped. Compress and slide back the upper radiator hose clamp, remove the bolts that hold the upper timing cover on and take a look. I'm guessing you're going to find that the belt is broken.

I agree with mtbtim that sounds like the timing belt broke off

Fuel pump wiring diagram

I had a 2000 4runner that had sit for a couple months bc my wife got a new car had to replace the starter and spark plugs but it ran great for about 45 minutes then I put fuel in it and it died right when I left the gas station. I have checked fuses and relays and I can't find anything wrong with it up there I just tested the wiring harness that plugs into the pump and it wasn't getting power. Any ideas? Up for anything need to get it running Thanks in advance.

I assume when you say pump, you are referring to the fuel pump? The fuel pump won't have power until you start cranking, were you cranking when you checked for power?

Can you give any more details of the specific problem, like it cranks but won't start?

Yea sorry fuel pump and no I did not I will have to test it while I crank it and it will crank but it won't run I took power from the battery to rhe plug and the fuel pump turned on so I just assumed it wasn't getting power. The fuel pump doesn't run when the key is turned to acc.

Can someone help me out? I just joined and don't have permission to post a new thread. I want to get my dad new headlight bulbs for Father's Day. His current headlights are awful. They are an ugly yellow that don't provide enough light to see at all during the night. What is the best plug and play bulb to get? Preferably one that produces a whiter light.

It could be a pulley but it's hard to say. Get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope and have someone start and stop the engine for you you while you listen to different pulleys and areas of the engine so you can narrow down the location and possible causes.

CS144 Alternator + Big 3 Wiring Upgrade

If you're getting into wheeling or overlanding and you're starting to add more things that cause a draw on your electrical charging system, there's a couple mods you might want to consider. One is the CS144 Alternator Upgrade and the other is the Big 3 wiring Upgrade. And, lucky for you, this video shows you how to accomplish both.
