3rd gen lift Rear Shock Confusion

Greetings,

I have read tons on lifts here. It is endless how much it has been discussed. I am so thankful for it all. However, I am still confused. Any help is greatly appreciated

I am installing old man emu 890 in the rear on a 1997

My dilemma is rear shocks

I was going to install some stock land-cruiser shocks ($40) but then heard I will need extended bump stops to prevent the coil spring from coming loose at full droop

Is this also true for Bilstein 5100? and OEM tundra shocks?

Will my bumpstop cones inside the springs help at all?

some of the specs I have found:

LC stock rear shocks
14.5 compressed
23.5 extended
9 Travel

Bilstein 5100
13.84 compressed
22.4 extended
8.5 travel

4runner stock
12.37 compressed
19.37 extended
7 travel

Thank you!!!

You dont want the shock to be what limits your suspension, they will break.

I am going with the BILSTEIN 5100 in the rear.

Bilstein 5100
13.84 compressed
22.4 extended
8.5 travel

if anyone cares

I bought from WheelersOffRoad.com. They have switched out the lower bushing with a 3/4 to fit the 4runner for a few more bucks $$. Well worth it for saving me the time and trouble

So I called some places to get some answers about the bumpstops and the 890 coming loose with the 5100.

The answers I have received are:

The 890 should hold in place with the 5100. The problem is more common with shorter coils like the 906 or when using longer shocks (LC80)

The #1 reason to extend Bumpstops with the 890 is to prevent coil binding caused by over-compession. This will shorten the life of a coil.

this is also true for shocks that are over extended (like bmodo16 stated)

I'm still not clear if my cone bumpstops will help??

I have 890s with Tundra 5100. They stay in place at full droop with the shocks fully extended and the rear sway bar on. Those 2 things are what keep the axle from drooping further. I believe the cone and bump stop are to limit compression in the rear which would cause damage.

Bump stops don't do anything to prevent the spring from dropping out (extension). As said, they limit spring compression.
