Apple CarPlay/Upgraded Head Unit
Hey folks. 2002 Limited 4wd, stock in-dash 6-disc changer and double-DIN HU, stock speakers. Everything works like new, god love how well the PO took care of it, but considering an upgrade. Been perusing Crutchfield (dangerous) and they list a few double-DIN HUs with Apple CarPlay compatibility. Did a bunch of searches and couldn't find a thread. Anybody running these? Thoughts?
Kenwood Excelon DDX6902S DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com
Kenwood DDX9702S DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com
Pioneer AVIC-6100NEX Navigation receiver at Crutchfield.com
Alpine iLX-007 Digital media receiver with Apple CarPlay? (does not play CDs) at Crutchfield.com
JVC Arsenal KW-V820BT DVD receiver at Crutchfield.com
FWIW, actually did a ton of searching on OEM upgrade options. Want things to look really clean and showroom-y, if that makes sense. One of the draws of these beyond the Apple CarPlay stuff is that they're mostly screen and not as loud/complex-looking.
Thanks.

Here's mine... Bought the Toyota harness w/o amp (I removed it) and it was pretty much plug n play. Running all the different wire (mic, gps, etc.) took the longest. Just grounded the green wire (e-brake bypass)

That looks so clean... Another thing I didn't know I wanted....
Do you have a how to or a walkthough posted anywhere? I suck at electronics but would love to tackle this job for how clean it looks.

that does look really nice. Just never been the kind of guy to spend over $100 on a stereo system. Think the most I've ever paid was like $130

Amazon has an awesome deal on the Pioneer that GGFerreir is using.
Currently sitting at $349, down from the usual $600

X2... I played with all of them before I decided. IMO the AppRadios are the best with the whole mirroring function.

It couldn't be easier if you get the harness. Match the colors together solder or crimp.

12v guy here.
ill offer my opinion from a perspective of a person that sells, installs, and services these "apple carplay" radios
pioneer, sucks hard, real hard. once it crashes, good luck getting it repaired.
kenwood
-ddx6902s does not do android auto. android needs 6.5" diagonal screen in order to work.
-ddx9902s does do both android auto and carp play
alpine
-not that great with carplay,
jvc no experience with it to give an opinion.
remember apple car play still uses APPLE MAPS, that LOOKS like google maps.
good luck getting to where you want reliably LOL
dont expect to stream youtube onto the screen thru carplay. you need hdmi, lightning to usb, and then a digital av converter...thank you apple for digging so deep into the consumers pocket, yes i dont like apple hahaha
i would wait till the dnx893s hits the market.
dual processors, linux based OS, built in navigation, and carplay/android auto.
/end rant

Hey 12V guy, 12.7 guy here! I like a fully charged battery! LOL Seriously though, I agree with what you say about the fruity computer company, but why the Pioneer issue? Is it the mirroring, or just Pioneer in general? I have had such success with Pioneer systems that tap the iPod, and the double din units in general. I personally don't like the Alpine units, Kenwood I do think is good, just no my preference in the GUI, although I haven't looked at them lately.
For the record I use a Samsung tablet instead, not as seamless but has so many more features, and I can move it to the motorhome easily!

let start with
pioneer
-updates. virtually NONE compared to 2 or 3 from kenwood thruout the year
-nex units just go into boot loop
-app radio just stops reading the ipod
kenwood
-dual core linux for 2016 units
-excelon are 2 year warranty, pioneer ONE, you sol when they crash in the 13th month lol
-they got widgets for 2016
-maestro intergration is AWESOME and it works unlike pioneer
-maestro will work with my built in radar system. k40 intergration.
alpine
-not the best GIU
-not the best gui
not the best gui
i have kenwood in all my cars hehehe

Just ordered my dnx893s and stumbled across this thread and have to agree with shadow.
I was a loyal Pioneer fan for 10+ years until about 5 or 6 years ago. It feels like they got to the top and then just stopped trying. I loved their navigation when it first came out as they were really the ones to push 3D views but then it was never updated.
Look at the Maestro RR, full Kenwood/Alpine compatibility, reduced Pioneer functionality.
I'll see if I can get a few photos during the install but it's 110*F out and I may be in a rush

Just did my install. Found a great deal on Jet.com for the Pioneer SPH - DA120. They're offering 30$ off and no tax if you create an account. So I got mine for 384$ out the door and it was delivered in 3 days.
Install was very simple and seems to have pretty good functionality so far.

I used to have an appradio until I ditchted crApple, so I needed a new HU. I went with the 4200NEX which has carplay and apple's version of car play. I love it. It doesn't have built in nav, which I found unecessary seeing as it has carplay, but it can be added. I like having the lip to rest my hand on for stability when using the touch screen or buttons. I initially got the wrong harness for toyotas without and amp so i had to get another one, but it was no big deal.
