CV axle play

My CVs were toast and were clicking and clacking all around town. They both started leaking grease.

I replaced them. Easy enough job.

I still have the clicking and clacking and there is almost 1/2 inch of in and out play where the CV meets the differential. No leaks. Everything triple checked for tightness.

What could it be?

Did you drive the CV axle all the way into the differential? seems like you didn't. Loosen the 35 mm CV axle nut in the wheel and get the nut all the way to the end of the axle. Then with a wooden block hammer the CV axle: This should push the CV axle all the way into the differential.

Do you remember having a C-clip at the end of the CV shaft towards the differential end)?

Yes the C clip is ok there along with all the dust shields and what not. Will pounding it from that end hurt it at all?

We all do it to get the inner CV joint into the differential. It should not take excessive force for it to go in. Just few mild taps and check the inner CV joints in-out free-movement with the differential.

Got new CVs in from Napa today. Much better than the Autozone trash.

Question though...still got a clunk going on when driving around slow. Did the wheel bearing test and they're fine. I know my tie rods, both inner and outer, are tits. Could those be causing a clunk??

Your steering would be sloppy if they were shot. They aren't shot feeling by hand. I felt no slop in them when it was free.

There should be no noises. Odd cause those cv axles were definitely a better quality that you installed.

The inner tie rods are pretty bad. They don't stay up when I let go, they just fall to the ground. Plus when grabbing the wheel at 9 and 4 when off the ground and jiggling you can hear and feel the clunking.

Whatever the case it's drivable and will diagnose later.

They aren't shot because they drop. If it's clunking though that definitely indicates slop in them. I'll check it out again.

Clunking and clicking is a known noise for ball joints that are worn out. When was the last time you replaced your LBJ's?

Did you fix the in and out play of the cv axle? And if so how?
