How do my front steering knuckles come apart?

Hi

I've done a bit of research on here but can't quite find exactly how my front steering knuckles come apart, which I would like to check before taking my them to a workshop to get the hubs and bearings pressed out of the spindle.

Here's a picture looking from the inboard (diff) side. I see an ABS ring and a retainer around the hub shaft:

Now this is what I assume is the order of dis-assembly. I'm looking for someone who has done this job themselves to confirm my idea, or to correct me, please.

First, the hub shaft is pressed out from the inboard (diff) side towards the outboard (wheel) side, which would leave the retainer and the ABS ring sitting loose on top of the bearing.

Then the dust seal and snap ring are taken off from the outboard side of the bearing, and the bearing is pressed out of the spindle.

Is this correct? The 3rd Gen is a rare truck here and I want to make sure I can explain exactly how to do the job to my mechanic.

Thanks!

I am not sure, as I just took mine to a shop and had them do it. Maybe these will help you...

Components

Disassembly

Reassembly

Your mechanic likely won't have the "SST" listed, so I am not sure how much help these will be. The shop I went to (granted the probably work on 4Runners/Toyotas quite often) asked no questions and had the job done in what seemed like no time at all. I walked across the street, bought a coffee and a muffin, ate them slowly and walked back where they were waiting for me.

Thanks for your reply. Looking at the FSM, my assumption seems to be correct.

I think the Toyota SST can be replaced by any suitably large cylinder shaped press attachment.

Thanks!

The ABS ring has a collar on the under side that is held in place by the retainer. You'll need to press out the hub first. Then the ABS ring, and retainer will fall right out. The direction you stated is correct too.

Pull the dust rings off first, and the dust shield can be removed once the hub is out. Then you can press the bearing back in some since it'll put a lot of pressure on the clip. Once you take the pressure off the clip will come out, and then you can press the bearing out in the same direction.

I just did all of this last month. Except I bought some used rust free parts to put back in.
