I'm a long time car enthusiast and actually sell cars for a living here in NJ. My main love was always fast cars and 1/4 mile racing and I've had a few different ones including a pullied + bolt-ons '04 Cobra and a fully built 1G DSM. I've also had plenty of trucks/suvs since I'm big into the outdoors with hunting and fishing including a few lifted trucks my personal favorite being a '94 Bronco with a 351 on 37s with a 8" lift and 4.56s.
These days I haven't had a cool ride in quite sometime so when I took this 2001 4Runner SR5 Sport in on trade 2 months ago with only 88k on it I had to jump all over it(if you knew how cheap I got it for you probably wouldn't believe me). This is how she looked the first day I saw the truck:
The vehicle was one-owner and garage kept all it's life. I was actively looking for something to tow my 16' aluminum boat and for hunting so this fit the bill perfectly. I won't be dd'ing it as I have a demo for work so this will only be driven maybe once or twice a week. The truck is in pristine shape and already had the t-belt done. The original owner already had a double din head-unit installed with streaming bluetooth, gps and an ipod charging cable so for now the stereo is everything I need. He also had a cold air intake with heat shield installed as well. When I bought the truck I had 0 intentions of modding it and planned to keep it stock. LOL like that ever happens...
After driving the truck for a few days I noticed the rotors were slightly warped and knew this would only get worse towing my boat. I did some research on here and found the Tundra Brake Upgrade thread. I changed the oil/filter at this time too. After some reading I also decided to have a B&M 70264 external trans cooler installed to protect the trans and cover the fluid mixing issue with the rad. At this point I thought all was good and I had the bugs ironed out. The truck had the typical dead/intermittent clock issue which I may or may not address down the road. My buddy who is my mechanic noticed the fan clutch seemed on it's way out so I ordered a new Aisin and decided to also swap plugs(IK22s) and NGK wires as well. At this time we found the valve cover gasket to be leaking into one of the cylinders so those had to be ordered as well. The PCV got cleaned out while in there now I felt we were all done and ready to enjoy the vehicle... See where this is going lol.
The suspension lift bug probably got to me enough after I removed the factory Sport running boards and saw how much better it looked without them. I towed my boat(only about 1500lbs or so) a few times and noticed the infamous rear suspension sag and it just started getting to me until I finally had enough and started reading up on lifts. Here you can see how bad the sag was:
Here's what I settled on ordering and the current status of the build now after I've thoroughly abused my debit card and bank account:
Old Man EMU Suspension Lift using 881 Front Coils + top plate spacers w/ 90004 Front Shocks & 890 Rear Coils w/ 60028 Rear Shocks
1" Fat Pats Body Lift
Toytec 3" Bump Stop Drop Spacers for the rear
Toytec Front Differential Drop
Toytec Panhard Drop
Toytec SS Front Brake Lines
Toytec SS Extended Rear Brake Lines
Level 8 Mk6 wheels 16x8 -10 Offset in Bronze
BFG A-T KO2's 285/75R16 Load Range E
RDCOBRA91 Ebay 1.25" Hubcentric Wheel Spacers
OEM Toyota Lower Ball Joints
New Lucas fluids in both diffs and t-case
DRL's disabled
VSC/TCS on/off switch installed
After ordering and installing all these items this week I realized a few more pieces of the puzzle I need and have the following parts ordered:
MStudt's standard extended sway bar links
OEM Toyota outer tie rods
Toytec Adjustable DOM Panhard Bar
OME 10mm trim packers which I'll be double stacking on rear coils to lift additional 3/4" to give slight rake and level towing ride height
I'm considering SPC UCA's but may hold off for now. I'll add better pics of how the truck currently sits after the rest of the parts are installed, alignment done and it gets fully detailed. It'll probably be a couple weeks until it's all in and wrapped up. If I forget anything I'll add it and let me know if you have any other tips or advice for the current mod list.
The truck does ride excellent with this suspension package I put together. I never realized how sloppy the old original stuff was until I drove it two days ago on the new lift. The OME components ride great, are not too stiff or harsh and it handles very well for what it is. I can't wait to get it finished and enjoy it!
