Well here's how it looked when we bought the Rig. 160K miles good shape but the interior was pretty beat up and it needed some maintenance.

I replaced the carpet with a carpet kit online, but shame on me if I was expecting that to be easy. The thing came in one big square that was "formed" or "molded to the car... HA! That was a total pain in the ass, one I'm glad was only a one time thing.

I also replaced the front seats with some perforated leather ones out of an 02, I think this specific leather was a dealer option as they were also mechanical seats not power.

The routine maintenance was performed as well oils, fluids, and grease's as all over the place. As well as new joints and a re-balanced driveshaft. And some much needed new nitto rubber. Then a few weeks later the starter went out on me after a football game.

A break from the build to showcase my first wheeling trip, we went to Bell Mtn and Charlies Creek. I'd never known anyone into 4x4's so this was a experience in it of its own. And I went balls deep right off the bat, i quickly learned where the skinny pedal was and how to use it. Coming down the first trail I saw there was a harder line taken by maybe 3 people and decided it would be a good idea to take it... Because I was already an expert... I ended up rolling on my sidewalls in a deep V notch for about 15 feet before the wall I was riding/pinned up against dropped off. Despite that I had an absolutely killer time and knew then and there I had found my new favorite thing to do. Enjoy the pics!

My first major modification was a front bumper. I purchased an Addicted Off Road Plate bumper through the group buy. It took forever and a day to show up but when it finally did I could not have been more happy. I had to order it built for a vehicle without a body lift so I had to modify the bracket to make it fit. Here's what it end up looking like, I chopped the bracket up some, a bit more than necessary but I only figured that out when it was done. Overall it fit exactly like it was supposed to but i had plans to beef up the bracket a bit since I wasn't confident it would be sturdy enough for me. And of course some obligatory flex pictures when I finished it up.

A little background on the wheeling pic's with all the 4Runners in them. Through the AOR bumper group buy I got introduced to @blight1234 who is an admin on the Atlanta 4Runners Facebook page. Also another reason why I dove so fast into this Toyota off road world. Anyhow we have monthly meetups where we talk shit about each others rigs and plan wheeling trips etc. although were not all 4runners, here's some pics from our group meets.

Had the passenger side front diff seal blow out on me and start puking fluid, so that needed to be changed.

Phantom Runner Build-img_1798-jpg

Phantom Runner Build-img_1799-jpg

Then I was prepping for a big wheeling trip, called GSMTR. So it was time for some sliders, I was ready to build them with the same guy who helped me with my bumper until my parents surprised me on my birthday with a set of 4X-innovations sliders! My dad had come around to the whole off road idea and persuaded my mom enough to get the OK on it. So on they went!

Phantom Runner Build-img_1708-jpg

Phantom Runner Build-img_2157-jpg

I also trimmed and cut my fenders a bit. The fenders were raised about 2" with a buzz saw and smoothed over with a grinder. The flares, which I always planned on reinstalling had the inside trimmed out with a hand held router, the thing cut through the plastic like a hot knife through butter but boy would it get away from you if you let it. I covered the lip in bed liner to prevent rust on the new edge and try and get the edge to be a little less sharp.

Also somewhere in there I upgraded the old 231mm Tundra calipers for some red power stop ones that I purchased off rock auto. They were an upgrade over the napa re-mans for sure.
Phantom Runner Build-img_0285-jpg

Phantom Runner Build-img_0286-jpg

I also picked up a '99 4cyl auto from a friend for cheap since it needed a new head, exhaust manifold, and seals everywhere. So that was my learning project and to make a little extra cash.

Phantom Runner Build-img_1411-jpg

Phantom Runner Build-img_1813-jpg

Next up I had to replace my rear axle seal. Was surprisingly easy but I went to like 3 auto parts store's to find the dang seal.

Phantom Runner Build-img_2172-jpg

And then I was mind boggled when one of my headlights went out, I replaced the light and still had nothing, so I checked the old bulb and it wasn't blown... I started checking voltages and was completely lost. Well after a couple of hours of this crap I went to the fuse box and discovered that there are individual headlight fuses, I had no clue so I pulled them out and the passenger was popped, new one in and lights were good to go again.

Picked up some serious goody's while I had the itch to spend, two yellow top Optimas, a pair of battery trays off ebay from a fab shop and a national luna dual battery isolator kit. I've got a hookup on Optimas and get them at $100 a piece so I saved quite a bit there. In total I was in the neighborhood of $700 as opposed to $1000. Yet a year later I still haven't installed any of it...

Phantom Runner Build-img_2659-jpg

Then I decided it was time for a custom grill with a little bit of lighting! Cut the grill up with a hand router for the fast and easy stuff and a drywall hole saw. Then reused part of the lower plastic span to drill holes in it and glue it to the top for LED's here's how it turned out.

So I picked up a 4.30 elocker and opened it up to check everything out and look at the gear! the factory grease is still there, never even made a full turn, looks like the thing was engaged a single time! It was a bit rusty but i cleaned it all up and got it installed, never found a matching front diff tho.

Phantom Runner Build-img_2536-jpg

Phantom Runner Build-img_3183-jpg

I also picked up a first gen Safari Snorkel from Southeast Overland in NC. He offers Atlanta 4Runners an local groups good pricing when he make large stock orders. The install was fairly easy and the fitment was good but I was terrified to cut the hole. I love the look tho! Also picked up a sport hood somewhere in there off craigslist.

Phantom Runner Build-img_4915-jpg

And I picked up a Airaid Jr. Intake kit. Kinda expensive but it looks a lot better than the shitty exhaust tube ISR that was there.

Yeahhhhhhh..... But it still looks pretty cool and I don't trust that rain wont get in and I've got nothing on the roof to and it has a slightly lower profile backwards. Looks kinda goofy forward, attracts to much attention I think.

Up an ordered an Addicted off road third gen heavy duty package for my father and my 4Runners. The front bumper went on his and sliders too eventually and the rear bumper went on mine.

We were worried it was going to rain while we painted the bumper so we tossed a canopy over it just in case, but the rain held off.

I had some minor fitment issues but noting I couldn't sort out in a few hours. I also don't know if its a normal option or not but I had them build the rear bumper for my 2" body lift. So this may have changed the fitment in some way, I'm not really sure.

And the final product! I've already bought a spindle I need to sink into the bumper for a swing out carrier but I don't know when I'll be tackling that.
