Arrow Saw this today...

Saw this truck today in Santa Cruz. Glad it didn't happen to him at speed.

Check your LBJs!

Doing mine next weekend. They seem fine now and were replaced at 150k under the recall, but that was nearly 100k ago...

Drop Zone

Arrow marks the spot.
...Smart 4Runner.

What would be the big flags/sounds/signs leading up to this event?

I've read many people on this site say that there are no warning signs to this event. Change your LBJs around 100k miles, especially if you are lifted. There still won't be play, slop, squeaks or sounds. It will just fail.

Also spend a bit extra and get new bolts, I'd not use the old bolts with new LBJ's.

It's kinda bizarre you saw this today since there's been a lot of threads recently about LBJ's. Pictures speak louder than words.

Toyota should of made this truck a solid axle from gecko. Would have been a beast !! The lower ball joints on these trucks are just shit. And it's scary !

Are there any visual indicators or any way to check the general condition of the LBJ's if there isn't any noticeable wobble or play?

Leaking grease from the joint is a clear indicator that they should be changed out.

Yeah once the grease leaks/washes out after the boots crack, it's only a matter of time before they wear out. Could be 100k more miles, 200k miles, or 10 miles.

Well from experience would be the O shit and the loud grinding and smoking of the skid plate over the interstate in my case.... The steering wheel felt really strange at first when u attempted to keep the steering wheel straight it wanted to snap back to the left and that one last tug to the right broke it all loose for me and then I went a skidding across interstate 40 like a dumass with sparks a flyin. So I just make it a routine to swap them out every 50,000 or at least check them for play often
