New wheel bearings; which way do they go in?

My local transmission specialist dismantled my front hubs and gave them back with a bag of bits.

The bearings have a plastic seal on one side, and a metal one on the other. Both sides are marked the same however, and I can't see which way they went in.

I assume that the side with metal seals is the one which gets the circlip (i.e. the outboard side), but I was wondering if anyone here could confirm this?

Thanks!

Check out this thread with pictures. I did this repair a year ago and had the same question but I hadn't disassembled the other side so I had that to go by. There's one picture in there that may help. I think you are right though. I kinda remember the black part being on the hub side.

I wonder why they designed it this way. In a wheel bearing application, the rubber contact type seal is almost always superior to a metal shield longevity wise (except for high speed or energy efficient applications). I noticed some aftermarket front bearings seem to use rubber seals on both sides whereas other brands follow the OEM design.
