Guys I have a question

I got a 5 speed. And I want to know if this is normal. When I'm In 2wheel and going through soft beach type sand. The truck basically sinks in and if you try to floor it like buckles hard. If you ever were in 2wheel going somewhat slow through sand you know what I mean. However my tranny shifter is ALL OVER THE PLACE AT THAT MOMENT. like side to side shaking. Once out of soft sand it's normal. I'm wondering if this is normal? Or could my tranny mount be going to shit. The rubber piece that is on cross member.

I've never been in deep sand w/o being in 4WD, and also never gunned it in sand.
Because that's what they tell you not to do, basically.

The shifter in mine bounces around quite a bit on our normal but rough California freeways. I imagine that gunning it in deep sand/2WD might set up a situation where the two rear wheels slip alternately, which would cause a lot of shaking in the drivetrain.

I noticed after I did my swap that the 5speed has a lot more play in the driveline than the auto. I think the fluid in the auto takes out the little bit of tolerance/slop that the gears have. I agree with pluton that rear slip could set up more shaking, you have to drive smooth! Replacing the trans mount is not hard, Just brace up the transmission remove the cross brace and replace.

So I assume it's normal. Just sometimes it's fun to try and make through in 2wheel lol

If I'm correctly picking up what your putting down, I would say that sounds axle wrap. Here is a description from mc2racing:

1.) Acceleration begins with good grip.
2.) The wheels move forward, toe changes, and available grip is reduced. Wheelspin occurs.
3.) During wheelspin, acceleration is very small. The wheels move back again, toe changes back, and the tire regains grip.
4.) Acceleration begins again, and the process repeats itself.

What they are talking about it in a street application but it works the same off road, and definitely in sand.

As far as the other more "mechanical" questions, I cant help on those.

normal. you would think something was broken if you were outside watching how much the entire drivetrain moves when you're doing that type of thing...

I think it's probably normal, but I'd check your motor and transmission mounts.

If motor mount was bad you'd definitely notice. It I'll check. Only mount for tranny is cross member. So I think it's normal like most of you say. Just wanted to make sure.

When we get some snow I love hitting the trails in 2wd and see how far I can make it. These things are very capable in 2 but really helps if you air down first then it's awesome throwing it in 4 when you do get stuck and the 4Runner turns into a different vehicle. 👍🏼

I had a 2001 Tacoma TRD with a locker out in ocotillo Wells years ago with the diff lock engaged in soft sand on Pole Line Road (for anybody familiar with the area), and it was doing the same thing as the OP described. It has leaf springs though, which is known for axle wrap, especially with "spring over axle" set ups such as the factory prerunner set up. Is axle wrap even possible with coil spring setups?
