HELP! '01 4runner VSC Trac and VSC Off Light

Like the title says. Got an 01 4runner with the vsc lights on. what causes it and how do I go about fixing it. I've googled it and found some people saying that it could be from a gas cap to mass air flow sensor to cat coverters. I'm lost. anyone with some advice.

Is your check engine light on also? Get a code reader and check for codes.

Those lights were on when I bought my 01 four years ago. I replaced the gas cap, and lights have been off since. Not saying that'll help your cause, but it's cheap. Also, do NOT get a cheap gas cap or generic one. Go OEM on this since it'll last a lot longer.

Did you have the check engine on as well?

I have all 3 on for the last month, hoping it being the cc sensor.
Its even better if its the gas cap

Agreed. Getting a scanner hooked up to check for codes would be a good starting point.

I had the P0440 show up alone back in May and a new gas cap seemed to have resolved that code. About a month later I got a P0446 code. Haven't had the time to fix it yet but from researching it and looking at the fsm, looks like I need to check out the charcoal canister & charcoal canister components (vsv valve, etc.) for damage and the associated hoses for leaks. Will also examine the gas tank filler neck.

I'm getting P0446 around the last 1/4 tank of gas on almost every tank. Once I fill up it goes away, and comes back on when it gets near empty. I'm going to be dropping the tank anyways for some frame work. I might as well replace the filler neck while I'm at it.

it threw a p01135 code for a/f sensor heater circuit malfunction. I replaced both the a/f sensor and downstream sensor. CEL still came back. I haven't had a chance to scan it again. I'm curious to know how the a/f sensor plays a role in vehicle stability control. I would imagine bad wheel sensors would cause the VSC lights to illuminate but i dont think thats the case from what i've been reading.

No role at all. Toyota just linked all the warning lights to up the visibility of the CEL. I guess folks tended to ignore just the CEL. Glad I don't have that.

Sorry to re-kick this thread but I need some help...my buddy has an 01 SR5 2WD with a 5VZFE. The VSC and TRAC OFF lights keep coming on every time he starts the truck. They come on as soon as the truck is put in gear and the tires start rolling. He just replaced the dash lights with LES bulbs and is wondering if that is part of the problem. We hooked it up to my OBD2 reader and it is not throwing any codes??? Throwing is for a loop and any help would be appreciated! Thanks
