High Output Alternator

Has anyone ever tried these alternators before?

High Output Alternator 160 Amp 1996-2002 4Runner 2000-2004 5VZ Tacoma

If not, I'm thinking about replacing it with this one.

Thanks in advance!

I'm sure the LCE is fine but you have to wait for them to build it if it's not in stock. I ordered mine from Quality Power, 160 amp, direct fit & ships same day.

Same (Quality power, 160a). 3 years and multiple mud-runs (plus one full immersion, and one 40mph impact into a culvert) later, it's still pumping more than enough juice for my needs. It's costly but you can't go wrong in my book.

If you going to upgrade your alt to high capacity. Make you search the big 3 upgrade that would need done to accommodate the current increase into the rig before putting that high capacity alternator in.

Is there any downsides to getting a 160 amp alternator and doing the big three but not getting a bigger battery?

How many amps does it push at 600rpm? Most hotrodded Alts only push those amps at higher rpm and if it’s the same Denso frame and internal fan it’s not going to be happy.

Just FYI,

LCE doesnt carry their own alts as they sell Quality Power alts. When you purchase from LCE, the alt you receive gets shipped from Quality Power in Cali. I learned the hard way.

From my own personal experience, I had nothing but issues with their alts. Had to ship back 2 alts under warranty for dangerously high voltage spikes only to receive it back doing the same thing. Gave up on them, so I put the OEM back in and dont have any issues.

I still have practically a brand new one sitting in my garage if you're still interested. Less than 2 miles on it. Big 3 upgrade definitely recommended if you plan on getting a HO alt.

The QP alt pushes those amps at higher rpm only and it is still in the same size Denso style frame. I believe the higher end alts from other companies pushes those amps at idle. They're in a whole new frame and look more exotic. I've seen them in the big boom stereo enthusiasts.

This is exactly why I put in a CS144 alternator instead of a souped up stock DENSO. My e-fan killed my stock alt because it pulls 20 amps at idle. The CS144 puts out a lot more amps at idle where I need them.

I have been running the LCE one since 04-01-2019

I did an E-fan conversion no problems with it what-so-ever, has been fine. They put a smaller pully on it so it does turn extra RPM's and I would guess that is a big part of it putting out more AMP.

The smaller pulley was the ticket. I put a 50mm on mine but a 48mm I think would be the optimal size for an automatic at idle in gear at 600rpm.

I just got the LCE 160a. Going to install it in the next few weekends. Anyone running a HO Alt with a dual battery set up? any advice for a beginner?

I bought my HO alternator thru LCE but ultimately it cane from quality power. At idle, in gear, it dies not keep up with just turning the a/c on. You can hear the draw in the fan motor. Wuality Power and LCE refused to admit anything was wring with it and stopped returning my calls. Going to try Green Machine or CS 144 next. Do not go with LCE or QP.

That sucks. I have had nothing but good luck with their stuff.

I know a couple of others who have used generic CS144 and also been fine with additional loads so it will also work fine. it's just really big.

I would be curious to know how the CS144 goes. if you have the same issue I would take a really close look at the connections and wires. once you go out of spec making sure everything is clean and fresh. if something is damaged or has corrosion hidden inside the wire sheathing can really make a big difference.

Thanks for posting I hope you get it sorted. sucks to get stiffed like that.

edit: I just looked back at the LCE page and that is not the same alternator I got from them. They must be using a new supplier so.. bummer they are no longer making them like they used to. totally different setup.
