Hey guys. I got my 2002 SR5 4wd with 85k miles in 2007. I have done a few upgrades over the years and of course the regular maintanence. I'm currently at 219k miles and it's making a funny noise that I wanted to get your opinions on. Last week it threw code P0300 and then the CEL went away in the same day and hasn't been back on. Anyways here's what it's doing: when I crank the car it sometimes delays and takes longer to start, and sometimes makes a metal grinding noise on start up as well. I'm guessing it's the starter, but I've also noticed a foul smell when it starts up too which could be other things. Any ideas?

Welcome.

so the p0300 is a random misfire code. the vehicle is not able to detect exactly which cyl is causing the misfire. a tune up (plugs and wires) is an easy way to start if you have not done one in 30,000 miles (iirc that the service for plugs) without being there and hearing the sound / smelling what could be wrong its hard to say.

Maybe look into a fuel filter. next couple times when you go to start the car. turn the key on but dont crank the engine, this will let the fuel pump prime the system to build pressure. after a few seconds turn the engine over and crank it, see if that changes how it starts.

Nice wheel upgrade!!!
Plugs and wires are very easy. Use a long extension on the back driver side plug to avoid the difficulty of that plug. All others are easily accessible.

If it's misfiring when starting, it's probably unburnt fuel you're smelling on start up. A tune up seems to be in order.
