Can you put an aluminum alloy spare wheel underneath?

The spare wheel for the 4runner I just bought is kind of screwed up, they seem to have cut it off from the bracket to get it down, not sure why since the mechanism works, but now the bracket that tightens against the hub is broken and the wheel has cut marks on it.

I also noticed that the steel spare wheel is heavier than the stock aluminum alloy wheel so can I put an alloy wheel up there? I am wondering because maybe it will rub and wear out the aluminum where the bracket tightens down to hold it up. Maybe I could put something between to protect the aluminum.

The stock aluminium split spokes on my 98 will fit in the spare location. Had to put one up there after I found a nail in my tire. It fit totally fine and there was no weird rubbing.
