Manual locking hubs for a 3rd gen ?!!?!
I was told that the manual locking hubs (ASAIN) for 89-95 4runners could also fit on a 3rd gen 4runners.
I own a 98.
Any thoughts on this??
I looking for some hubs but I cant find much online....
Thanks
Pat

I had thought they only swap on Tacomas, not 4Runners. I've seen manual hubs on Tacomas before.
Why not just add a rear e-locker? Don't even have to leave the vehicle that way.

You CANNOT swap early pickup/4runner models onto the 3rd gen. You can only swap the first gen tacoma manual hubs into the 3rd gen 4runner. They are the same steering knuckle, and the only difference is that in '96 they did off with manual hubs when they created the 3rd gen 4runner.

I am manual Hub swapping my 4runner. Easy as finding 1st gen Tacoma steering knuckles and taking the manual CV's from the tacoma to do the swap.

Well there ya go. I think with Tacomas you can just swap the hubs from the older 89-95 Pickups and 4Runners, I know it's pretty easy but never done it.

You need the base 95.5 to 2000-something Tacoma base model with manual hubs if you want to swap everything. Grab the whole knuckle along with the front axles (the axles are different too).

For anyone with first hand experience...
What's stopping someone from buying new/used manual hubs, new/used Taco manual CV's (probably easier getting new Napa's w/ lifetime warranty), buying new wheel bearings (might as well do them while you're in there), and using stock 3rd gen ADD spindles and converting them? I don't know if you have to ditch ABS altogether or what, but I remember reading up on this in there past and someone mentioned that you'd lose ABS if you did this swap. I hate ABS like most do, but I also don't want to have to remove the ABS bulb behind the dash because having the light on wouldn't fly with my OCD lol. Also on that note, would having an ABS light on affect a CA smog test or is it just CEL's?

I just did the manual hub conversion about two months ago. You could do what Dezert4Runner and buy piece by piece and cobble it together. I think you would want the 1st gen tacoma spindle put into the 3rd gen 4runner steer knuckle to keep the ABS. It could be priced out one way or the other. I just got the steering knuckles and CV axles from a 1st gen tacoma. I replaced the bearings in the steering knuckle and had the CV axles rebuilt and booted. Oh, I cleaned up the hubs, painted everything, got new studs, and replaced all the other bolts. Its a pretty straight forward job. Now I have three rebuilt 3rd gen toyota CV axles to figure out what do with.

2 1/2 years ago I got manual hubs w/spindles and cvs out of a 96 base taco w/o abs and ran those for awhile. I pulled the bulb for the ABS light (not all that hard to get to) so it didn't make me crazy. It did not affect my ability to pass state, but I'm not in Cali either, I don't know those rules.
IF you opt to do it this^ way you will lose your speedometer. It will work via the rear until you hit a bump and then stop until you start from a stop (or very slow pace) again. It is a solvable situation requiring the speed sensor from the transfer case of the Taco, a wiring pin and a little splicing at the cluster. Detailed in my build thread if questions. #1935 habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread - Page 97 - YotaTech Forums
When I eventually put in new bearings I swapped over to the 4Runner's original spindles, got my ABS back and put the bulb back in the cluster. I left the speed sensor as the input for the speedometer.
Those brass bushings are available via ORS, thank goodness! Real nice guy, too. You cannot buy them separate from Toyota. There's one inner and outer per side. ORS Replacement Hub Bushing - Products - Off Road Solutions
I chose to reboot the cvs when that came due, am not giving up the 'yota axles thankyouverymuch. #2489 habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread - Page 125 - YotaTech Forums
The hubs do require maintenance in the form of cleaning/very light greasing. It's an extra step I don't mind doing every once in awhile. It is an extra thing that has to happen not too often. Changing out CVs aren't hard but again, a little extra step of removing the hubs has to happen. #2305 habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread - Page 116 - YotaTech Forums
Pic for the whores

The AISIN faces and internals are identical to the Tacoma pieces just a different color, the aluminum hub body is different.
Parts list:
Tacoma spindle with manual hubs or just the hub itself if you have ABS
Tacoma aluminum hub body piece
Outer hub of your choice, 86-2000 AISIN, Warn, etc.
Manual hub CV axles
Differential extension piece without ADD actuator
4Runner brake lines and calipers (Tacoma pieces are different)
4Runner Ball joints and Outer rod ends
DO NOT put any grease in your hubs when going together. They are made to be assembled dry, I've had to clean out countless sets full of grease gumming them up and causing them to not work.

If anything I'd use a light coating of gear oil, its not necessary though.
