My plan for transmission drain and refill

Hey guys,

I'm planning on a transmission drain and refill tomorrow. From my research, apparently doing everything while the car is at operating temp is the best way to do it. Specifically I'm thinking tomorrow morning to drive the car for about 10-15 minutes, draining the transmission (4-4.5 quartz come out right?) and then putting that back in and checking the dipstick for the HOT reading. Does this sound correct?

Thanks!

maybe, id first start with a cold reading because your new added fluid will be cold and not at operating temp. get your fluid up to cold on the dip stick, then drive around and see if it comes up to hot.

if you were to do it like your saying, you could have the potential of over filling the transmission.

its not hard process. just getting the trans dip stick seem to give people troubles due to the multiple bends it has to go through.

Understood, but drain while hot still correct?

Drain while hot and measure how much comes out. Put in exactly what you took out. Take it for anther 15 minute drive and check the level while it's running (after cycling through all gears for a few seconds).

You want it at the top of the hot range.

If the fluid hasn't been changed in a while you can do a few drain and fills. You can also do a complete fluid exchange.

Tim the tool man (mtbtim) has a video he made if you want to go that route.

Drain fluid. Measure how much came out. Put new fluid of that amount back in. Just drive it so it's warm. If it's hot then you just burn your hand pulling the drain plug.

I know you just want to do a drain and refill but if you ever want to do a full flush, here's how to do it without any special machines.

Well just want to update everybody on what happened.

I went to drain the oil, and discovered the bolt was somewhat stripped, when I cranked it to drain it loosened for a bit then just started spinning. I left it in my garage and will re-thread that hole going a size up, probably take out my headlights and retrofit HID projectors in there too. Might do some paint polishing too while it's sitting taken apart.
