My transmission cooler install

I got a transmission cooler from a Ford Escape. It is a long and narrow cooler with 8 channels to move fluid from one end to the other.

I am about the mount it in the place as shown. Any thoughts/comment on this?

This is in-line with the radiator.

Thanks
nissanh

Nope, no comments really. That's where it is most recommended to be placed, in front of the A/C condensor.

From a ford escape? Interesting.... Looks like it belongs there!

Are we looking at the transmission cooler or an A/C component?

Sadly it still probably didn't help the transmission. Those trannys are so weak for the rather spirited 3.0l engine. PITA to work on.

Got a way to read tranny temps?

I use an IR temperature probe to check the temp. after a good drive. Had a tube type 4x6 inch cooler mounted at the lower valence but I wanted something big. I plan to use the tube cooler as a power steering cooler in my cruiser 100.

The two barbs are long enough to adjust in the proper direction.

Yes, it really looks like factory item! Happy with the progress so far.

You're probably completely safe, but for the rest of us you should install a gauge and get some actual running numbers. This looks like a good option.

In-line is the way to go. It's proven to keep the temps more stable, and warm up the engine a LOT quicker.

Is this preventative? Or have you had issues with the tranny already?

^^ No issues with the transmission. Just wanted to add an extra cooler to cool the trans-fluid. I live in west TX and it gets about 105 Fahrenheit easily (40 Celsius) in the summer. I don't tow but wanted to be on the safe side.

You're not worried about the milkshake?

I just got a 99 4runner and live in Vegas (115F in summer sometime). since its so old i wanted to bypass the stock radiator, and already picked up a b&m cooler.

also, would an OBD bluetooth ECM reader be able to tell me the trans temp with a cooler, or do i need to install one directly in the line if i bypass the radiator now?

Edit: after reading a few similar threads it seems like running only an external cooler in 100+ ambient air temps may not cut it. i went with the B&M 70264 (14.4 k btu). would you recommend i also buy a new koyo radiator and run the cooler inline??

btw i know i quaoted absalom but anyone feel free to jump in

I have koyorad in both of my 4runner and added a b&m cooler in my 3rd gen installed inline with no issues. Used toyota red coolant. Offroaded socal high elevation and desert run without issues. As long as you change the radiator per factory recommend, you should have no milkshake worries running inline.
