In my opinion these trucks are worth saving even after a hard life of neglect. My truck was neglected it's whole life until I got it. Most of the parts I replaced were original too.

How I got the truck:

It was free.

Passenger LBJ failed when the PO pulled out of a gas station. They figured the truck was toast and offered it to me for free.

She's running like a champ now and even has a few upgrades like better headlights, GPS, LEDs, dash-cam, etc...

Wow she's quite the looker now.

I wonder if any of these super high mile runners are the 6 cylinder. They blow head gaskets, I imagine the 4 cylinder lasts longer.

Looks great!

Next time you're at the dealer maybe pick up the little lamps that light up the ECT and rear window switches. There are two of them and they are each different. The ECT lamp works fine in the rear window switch position but not the other way around.

No need to ask how I know this....

I'm not sure if you're asking me and if you are referring to the GPS on the right or the cell phone holder on the left (if you are, you have better eyes than me).

The GPS is dash-mounted and hard-wired behind the dash. Totally and quickly removable and adjustable too.

The cell phone holder is a magnetic wireless holder that I have been too lazy to hardwire yet, but it's nice that I just slap my phone on it and it charges. I need to hard-wire it soon and get that last cable out of the way. So far I have the Dashcam, GPS, and ScanGauge all wired up behind the dash. I really hate wires all over the place.

Thanks, she's not a built-up offroad monster...yet. But once I pick up another
3rd gen, this one will get some goodies I'm sure.

As for engines, I have the 3.4L like most 3rd gens.

Thanks, and I'm usually pulling switches/pushpins etc., anytime I'm at the junkyards too.

What! My man! The whole reliability of the 4runner IS the 5VZ-FE. The six cylinder!
You must be thinking of the 2nd gen 4runner which runs the 3VZ-FE. That thing likes head gaskets upwards of 200,000 miles apparently.
All the big mileage trucks on this forum are six cylinders but I think that's only because they're much more popular.

The 4 cylinder is also extremely reliable. The 3RZ FE is basically a more advanced 22RE (this is what I've heard at least) which is known to be bulletproof. Like the V6, there are many 4 cylinders with 300k+ and running strong. In general all 3rd gens have an extremely reliable powertrain that will last a longtime with proper care.

Thumbs up 2000 t4r

I've got 260K on mine and have had more than one mechanic offer to buy it after working on it in addition to random notes left on my windshield from total strangers asking to buy it as is and from car dealerships. I was hoping to reach 300K before I purchased another vehicle but now I'm thinking this is the last vehicle I'll own. I'm 55 and shooting for at least 500K. I feel more confident taking my T4R on extended open road excursions now than I have with other vehicles I've owned with just a fraction of the mileage. Best purchase I've ever made. I've enjoyed not having a car payment for over 15 years.

Should've took pictures of the underside being from Ohio, just very curious about the condition of the frame.

My 1998 Tetanus 1 has the original transmission and engine. The transmission was new filter and exchanged the fluid at 215k. I bought off the original owner. The engine was never opened yet at 270k miles.

I think I'm more impressed with how long the auto transmissions lasts on these things. Not only that but they are smoother shifting than most newer trucks today.

They do seem to hold together a very long time if they get a little TLC once in a while.

I got 331k on my 3rd gen and the beast runs great for a 25 year old SUV that is slow as hell. It is slow and steady and that is ok with me since it is now our dog car.
