Hey team, Im here looking for answers for my 2001 4runner 4x4 sr5 Auto, problem. 2001 4runner lifted, I got off the interstate a few weeks ago and it stalled out as i was stopping at the light as If it was stuck in a high gear. It would shift fine but wouldn’t stop as if the torque converter was stuck. So I change the TQ and it didn’t fix it. I got under the truck and could hear the tranny rattling. I took off the oil pan and see that the transmission is shot. So I have a spare tranny in the shop out of a 1999 4runner so they were similar but had differences. I had to change the transfer case from the 2001 tranny into the 1999 tranny and I changed the valve body out of the 2001 where it has a electric throttle solenoid into the 1999 that had a cable for the throttle. Put it all together, the rattling went away but still going from park to any gear it just goes and pressing the break will stall the motor as its stuck in gear. The tranny is good and a new TQ. So I’m thinking could it be the ECU or the solenoids?. Any advice will help. I'm thinking electric but Idk where to start. What sucks is I have a foot of snow out side and not beast to go play.

Have you looked at the idle air control valve? If it stalls smoothly without jerking like if the torque converter was still locked, it might be it.

This happened to me. The transmission would stay in lockout in all gears, but wouldn't move after restarting it. The idle air control valve is difficult to service on our trucks. My issue ended up being the TPS, which you can't buy separately. You have to buy the entire throttle body. A transmission shop would be able to see the inputs of the tps and aps or accelerator position sensor to see if they are putting out ok. I never got a code with mine either, just weird readings from the tps

I haven’t checked the TPS or The ICV but I will start there. It runs grate idles fine in park and in natural, but shift to drive or any gear and its like dumping the clutch on a manual, its going but doesn’t have enough movement to where it stalls out and dies.

Exactly what happened to me, only mine was intermittent.

Mine does something similar but only when wet, like raining or after going through a car wash. It'll go back to shifting normally afterwards though. Would the TPS be affected by high moisture? I just cleaned the IAC and haven't gotten a chance to test it yet to see if that fixed it.

Hey team, it was the valve body. I had to clean it and lube it up. Took it apart and cleaned it. If anyone does this make sure you take video or pictures of what spring goes where because it can get confusing. She’s running like a champ now. Doing it myself it very satisfying saved thousands.
