My 1997 SR5 build and repair thread

I purchased the above SR5 with a blown head gasket and slipping trans for 550. It has 258,000 miles on it. It's been garage kept for most of its life. Frame is very clean for a PA vehicle.

I have been looking for something like this to receive the engine and trans from our wrecked 96 SR5 from September 2014 when it got T-boned.

This will document the swap and any mods and all repairs.

Just picked up the T1819 Scion radio for 50 from Craig's List. It looks like it came with the two required adapters already. Just need the antenna Y cable. May be the USB too. I'll look what the other connectors are back there.

Forgot to mention the center trim panel bulging out at top. Looks like PO didn't know about the two screws behind the heater controls to remove it. Hopefully a heat gun on that plastic mount will allow me to push it back in place.

My 1997 SR5 build and repair thread

Today I put the front end back together on the wrecked 96 to get ready to try and drive it into garage.

I removed the half shaft on the side that was wrecked so turning wheel doesn't ruin it. I couldn't get the piece in diff housing so I just pulled it apart at the inner boot. When I get it pried out I'll put the half shaft back together. It was a new Napa a few months before the accident.

I can't load pictures currently. TapTalk fails so may be later

Today I ordered the Y antenna adapter and the adapter to go from the small window antenna connector to the larger normal size to plug into the Y cable I ordered.

The 97 puppy hauler got a flat. A piece of metal wrecked the tire. So now the maroon 97 project has donated it's new battery and the new Hancoks tires to my wife's 97 limited.

Installed the T1819 radio I purchased on CL last week. It came with the connectors necessary to plug into the 97. Plays nice.

It seems the PO bent the left heater control mount trying to pull the center trim panel without removing the controls cover to remove the two screws. Must try and straiten it out so the radio doesn't hit the heater controls to get the lower screws in the radio mount.

For documentation purposes I also purchased the Y antenna adapter and the micro antenna adapter to connect both antennas into the radio. All though I had good reception with just the main antenna.

This napa exhaust was installed about 9 months before the accident. Then it sat for 2.5 years in which time I would start and run engine off and on usually for 20-30min. It looks great.

I ran out of penetrating oil and hands were getting cold so I'm at the point where I need to get the cat off and those bolts wouldn't move. So tomorrow it's hit it with heat and some penetrating oil. That bracket bolt at the flange looks like it's going to cause problems. May be I can remove the two bolts from the bell housing and remove the CAT and bracket together and work on it when it's in a better location. The front O2 sensor mount looks ruff.

Must remove the engine harness pigtail from the ECM and make sure the trans and O2 sensors are part of that harness and not a separate harness from the body. If not oh well. When I pulled the 4.7 from the Grand Cherokee I just unplugged the TCM and PCM plugs and laid them On the intake.

A am also cutting the rad support off to make removal easier. It's junk anyway.

The condenser had quiet a few fins rotted out. Lots of brackets are real rusty. I must look at the 97 and hope they are in much better shape. The heater core lines coming from the back of the engine look like a real bugger to replace with engine still in. Rear dive shaft is removed also. Tomorrow I'll pull front and deal with the Cat. And figure out if I want to remove the power steering pump and lines to pull the engine. The lines are real rusty. I don't plan on reusing them. But I want to save the pump and clean it up.
