Basic Lift Question - read all the lift info threads
Ok, I hate to come off like a noob, but Im prepping to install front coilovers on my Runner. The initial lift kit on it had rear shocks, springs and a front spacer for a 3" lift. My question is how is a 3" lift achieved in the front when the spacer is just barely over an inch?
Im about to install some Toytec Ultimate Coilovers in the front. Do I just max them out for the full 3" of lift? Or do I start in the middle and play with height till Im happy?
Here is how she currently sits

Omg!
Your paint is EASILY the nicest I've ever seen for red on a 3rd gen. Holy shit that's fire. Has it been resprayed?
It's because the strut is mounted in the- approx- "center" of your lower control arm(LCA). Like ripcord said- its the lever ratio principal.
For example- for 3" of travel out at your wheel, the shock travel is only around 1 1/2".
Hope that makes sense.
Ps-
Please take good care of that thing- red is pretty uncommon, and a red that nice is insane!
Please don't go and paint everything black

You can achieve 3' of lift wit those coilovers. It is design for 3'. You will loose some travel. Anyways, there are many things in consideration. Any weight in the front and stuff. Also how high is the back. Id adjust so the front is slight lower then the back to have some rake.

Not yet, but I plan to add a Relentless Fabrications front bumper in the next month or so along with a winch.

If your planning on adding a Relentless bumper in a month I hope you ordered it at least a month ago. Mines on order since late November and I'm hoping they have it done by February. It was about an 8 week lead time when I ordered but with the holidays I expect that to be a little longer.
I went with the Toytec/Bilstein lift for my rig. I thought about going with coilovers but decided against it. Most of my buddies with coilovers haven't adjusted them in years. So I figured save that cash and put it towards the winch/bumper. With the bilsteins set in the first perch I got about 3.5 inches of lift in the front and the same in the rear with the Superflex coils. The Eibach springs for the front have a 620lb spring rate so I'm figuring the bumper will settle the front another 1/2" or so.
I came to that figure in a purely scientific way. My bumper and winch will weigh about 160 lbs. I'm 150. So I grabbed a ten pound dumbbell and stood on my bumper. I then had a buddy take the measurement. Like I said very scientific. If the bumper settles out the spring over time I can always raise the strut a perch.

So that's the technical term! See, I would have tried explaining it in my own words not knowing the correct terms to use. Leave it to a suspension engineer

You might or you might not fully get 3" wit that weight. But thats ok. I would get a wheel alignment now, so you dont ware yourr tires out. Then install your bumper, winch and whatever else. Compare you suspension measurements. See how much rake you have and see if you can crank up the coilovers little more. But be carefully because you dont want to compress the coil to much!

Beautiful! I love seeing paint restored like that
I guess I only answered half of your question. To the second half-
I wouldn't max them out, myself. At least, not at first. I would set them maybe 3/4 of the way up, and go from there.
Also, the lower your coilovers are, the better. Less stress on your suspension joints, as well as your CV axle joints. Although I love the way mine sits, I'm considering lowering it down from 3" to 2".

yea anything high will cause more wear and stress..... but these coilovers are made for 3".... and if you want 3" then they are made to be set at 3". Although i think i will set mine just a 1/4 or 1/2 bellow 3" in front
