Bump
I know this is an older thread but there was some good info from J.Octane and it came up in a search - I am having issues (likely the torque converter according to what he said).

What are your trannies symptoms?
Mine just started the high pitched whine, then marbles, then I drove it to a friends (mechanics) home for its last ride for a while.
I want a reman toyo which are on back order 2-3 months, so now bouncing the 5 speed conversion around, hmmm....

.
Fortunately I haven't needed any Trans work yet, knock on wood.

Lost my 4spd Transmission last night
Looking for overall suggestions... just had the engine out of this thing 2 months ago replacing all the seals and doing an EGR delete, and now this.
99 4runner 4x2 2.7L 4cyl automatic, 225k miles.
Symptoms: last week I noticed the car didn't begin to roll in Reverse when no brakes engaged. I thought that was odd. 2 days ago I felt a vibration cruising around town sub 45mph. Thought it might be a nail in the tire. Examined it and that wasn't it. Went away and I chalked it up to a bad road.
Late last night, leaving a stop light, vehicle would not shift into X gear to get me over 30mph. Was stuck at about 2500rpm. No check engine. Bad smell and smoke so I shut her down. I can still drive the car in 1st gear, haven't tried anything other than that since. I can rev the engine to hi rpm when in Park. EDIT: Fluid reads full at the HOT marker when it's cool. I shouldn't be overfilled, but I don't know enough about transmissions to say what that means.
Any suggestions? Looking at a used A340e transmission. No one seems to have rebuilds in stock at the moment.

No suggestions, but mine has been driving great for 10 months with a 'straining' noise (mainly in gear, but not exclusively). Still gonna find a used tranny when I get a chance. Does anyone know about specific flavors of the 340? I took a picture of the model label/tag on mine but haven't been able to translate it.

What makes you think its not overfilled?
Yota1 out of Riverbank, CA can build you a new one for $2650.

It shouldn't be overfilled, as it was just gone thru by my mechanic that worked on these at Toyota when they came out. But again, I'm not sure why it's reading totally full when it's cold. Something inside it definitely burned up, I could smell it. It hardly wants to go in Reverse anymore.

A up to temp trans will drain 4qt of Atf. I don’t even bother with the stupid dipstick anymore.
Get the trans up to temp by driving and pull the drain plug. When it’s done add one gallon.

Yea that's what I've found when I do a quick D&F, if I let it drip while changing oil or something it's varied some.
Did a screen change in Feb let it drip for two days with front lifted slightly less mess when pulling pan 5.5-6 qts in bucket.
Had to use dip stick.

Yes it's a 2000 (built Feb 00) LTD AT with E-locker (4.30), VZN185L frame stamp with A340F transmission per door jamb sticker. Do you what the F stands for?

“F” is the 4wd variant. “E” is the 2wd variant.
