The tranny otherwise shifts perfectly normal other than a slight delay in shifting into D or R when its super cold out. It never used to do that. The whine goes away after about 20 seconds and everything is totally fine after that.

Yup. I had a whine when cold. Drove just find and shifted great. Probably had the whine for 3 months before it completely took a dump and sounded like marbles in the trans in all gears and the whine became supercharger like.

Thanks for the feed back. I've read others had the same whine when cold because their filter was plugged. Once the filter was cleaned, the noise went away.
Did you ever check your filter? I imagine if the pump is starved for fluid, over time, it screws up the pump. It just started on mine so I'm going to clean out the filter this weekend. I'll report back on what I find and if it fixes the whine. If the whine doesn't go away, looks like a tranny swap is in my future...

My filter was fine and not clogged at all. It is a basic mesh filter and nothing that I can see getting clogged all too easy.

That was after the complete failure. While it was on its way out it was an extremely quiet whine. I probably put 6k on the trans after the noise started.

I'd have to find the posts, but there were several examples of the filter (which I know is really just a fine metal screen) all gunked up with black sludge. They used carb cleaner to flush it out.
I'll know more on Saturday.

Here is a video of the noise it makes when cold. Once it warms up, the noise goes away. Still drives fine. In the back of my head I'm thinking I may need a tranny soon though.

Thats what mind sounded like at first and it was only here and there. As the miles racked up, she began to fail more to the point where i took the videos. You could clean the filter and hope that fixes it, got nothing to lose doing so.

Yeah I already ordered the gasket (10 bucks) and I got tranny fluid so I might as well check.
Let it be known, my 4R did have a pink milk shake about 12k miles ago. I'll know more this weekend when I drop the pan.

You just said gasket. I thought we had to use FIPG or some other type of sealant for the trans pan. Is this an OEM gasket or aftermarket?

Only thing i can think of is maybe he is replacing the cork gaskets on the filter?

Felpro makes a rubber gasket that several people have used. FIPG is what the FSM calls for but the rubber gasket is nice because you don't have to clean off the FIPG if you ever need to drop your tranny pan.
Get that tranny swap video done Tim, I'll probably need it soon!

Pulling the trans isnt that bad. Granted i had a lift to use, but overall it was not terrible. Make sure to take off the exhaust hanger bracket, drop the swap bar, have long extension for the top bolts.
Also, up to you, but I trust FIPG 100 times more than the rubber gaskets. Plus other than this time, when were you planning on ever dropping the pan.
