sequoia T/C with LSD in 3rd gen??

So I've been thinking about swapping in a VF3AM Multi Mode T/C to my 97 Limited 5 speed. After a bit of research i realized they used the VF3AM T/C in some early Sequoias... Then they went to a VF4AM T/C which has a Torsen LSD...

are the VF3AM and VF4AM interchangeable? does anyone know if i can bolt the VF4AM to my R150F?

Im looking for a good full time four wheel drive platform to do 4wd launches in a turbo runner...

From my understanding the VF3AM is an open diff style T/C so if you were to lose traction at the rear its just gonna continue transferring power to the rear where as the VF4AM will consistently deliver power front and rear at whatever the ratio of the torsen LSD

edit: as always i kept reading and found they used the VF4AM in the 4th gen 4runner as well which probably means they are a completely different bolt pattern but i would still love to know if they are in fact somehow compatible with the 3rd gen 4runner

Haven't seen this done, but if you're venturing that far in then I see no reason not to go for the better transfer case.

Have you considered an FJ Cruiser MT transfer case instead? Full-time 4WD with torsen AWD, 4WD (locked) and 4L all mechanically controlled. Most of the 'modern' Toyota transfer cases have the same mounting bolt pattern, so they should all bolt up to the transfer case adapter on the back of your (auto?) transmission. Driveshaft lengths will be different depending on which case you get. Any of them with electrical control will be harder to put in unless all the wiring component matches your current 4WD computer.

If it does all work, report back... I have a plan brewing along these lines but it will be a year or two until I can get to that project.

I haven't but certainly will now! I would however like to keep the 2wd option. Unless someone can give me more info about how the VF3AM Open Diff style T/C works...

Am i right in thinking that if you were to be running with the center diff unlocked and broke traction to the rear, then more power would be transferred to the rear rendering the system virtually a 2wd? does this make sense and sound correct? It helps you not lose traction as easily but once you do its completely useless?

I'd rather have the Sequoia case for 2WD. I'm pretty sure the VF3AM has a viscous coupling, so it does have a locking effect though it may not be as aggressive as the Torsen. Honestly if one wheel loses traction like that then I'd engage 4H locked to reduce stress on the transfer case.

how can we identify the transfer case? is there a model stamp somewhere in the transfer case?

My truck has multi-mode 4WD and it's center diff is the planetary gear type. no viscous coupling.
