T-case interchangeability

I have a 2000 Limited with multi-mode. I bought a used trans from a 2000 sr5 but it does not have multi-mode. Can I simply swap the t-case from mine to the new trans?

The multi mode uses a common fluid with the transmission (atf) while the conventional (non-limited model) case uses gear oil and is sealed from the transmission. That's the limit of my understanding at least.

Actually, no. the multi-mode TCs also make use of GL5 gear oil, not ATF.

I think you're referring to the 2nd gen 4Runner TC that uses ATF (TCs attached to automatic trannies.

Aren't there two transmission designations between the two? a340h and a340f? Or was that strictly year dependent?

IIRC, those designations are for 2wd vs 4wd versions.
